its pretty nice, the screen is his though, i will prob. update the memory, 80 gig HD seems small for a desktop, but who knows, this is turnin out to be the xmas of a lifetime!

so far.
premium xbox 360 and games and controllers and travelers case and accesories
compaq presario v2410us laptop for moms house (good deal)
apple ipod video (30gig)
Dell XPS 200 (a small sexy sleek little thing)

WITH MEDIA CENTER PC FOR MY 360! great!!!

I'm just making sure that you realized something:

[420-5585] Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, English without Media, for Dimension

And no offense, but it does seem like something of a rip off, 😉.

Tell him to return it, give you the money and build the computer yourself. For that price you could build an uber system. (say the fp monitor got lost in the mail though)

He got a new computer for christmass, weather or not it cost a couple bucks to much couldn't matter less. Let's not rain on the guys parade.

To the OP, congrats man, enjoy it. I tried to talk the wife into getting me a new rig for Christmass, no joy.

i know its a rip off, my dad didnt know what he was doing, but the XPS systems are there top of the line computers, so it will probably be pretty good. Does the HD and memory seem small? What about a pentium D? What is that? I am hoping thats one of the best. Reinikum what do u mean about hte media center?

Compared to amd P-D is crap.. but its still useable.. not like it's going to kill you..

its xmas, stop bitching to santa

also could u guys give me a link to some memory I can buy? If this has two slots, one being 512 mb then i can just stick another 512 in there, but i just need to know what kind exactly (maybe a link to the specific memory i could buy please!!!). If it only has one slot or has 256 in each slot then i guess i will just get 1 gig. Just need to know how many slots it has, if u can tell from those numbers, and if both of them are filled up, and then what i should do from there to get my computer to 1 gig memory, jeese pops got ripped off

Wow, that system is 100% utter crap compared to a system you could build yourself for $1500. The only useful thing on there is probably the monitor. I'd say it would be worth about $500 without monitor.

Don't let all of the negative responses get you down. This will be a solid computer for you, and since it was a gift, I don't think that you got ripped off. And don't believe anybody that tells you that this computer is crap, because that is just not true.

Like most of the people in this forum, I consider myself a computer enthusiest. I prefer to build my own computers, and I spend more time and money tinkering and upgrading the various components of my computers than I should (or really need). Yes, my initial reation was "Wow, I could have built a faster, more robust computer with $1,494," but then I had to stop myself and take a more objective view of your situation.

The Pentium D processor is Intel's dual core processor. While it is not as fast as AMD's dual core processor, it is still very respectable. The memory, hard drive, and video card can be upgraded, depending on your needs. What exactly do you plan on doing with this computer? I noticed you have a new XBox 360, so I assume most of your gaming will be on the XBox console? If you plan on Web surfing, word processing, spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and light gaming, then this rig (in its current configuration) should be more than adequate. If you plan on doing moderate to heavy gaming, then I would recommend you upgrade your RAM to 1 GB (min) and your video card to an X800 varient or higher. These upgrades will cost you much less than building a new computer from scratch.

Enjoy your new computer! It was a nice gift from your father and should be appreciated.

I wasnt trying to put you down as it is a sorta nice system its just that dell has always been expensive, and in the desktop market its really no need to go with major manufacturers if you know what your doing. But it is a new computer with a nice 19" monitor so enjoy. Make sure you reformat the hd first or your have problems.

Also take a look at this article, might be an interesting read. Dell XPS 400 Review

Here's how to enjoy it:

1. Reformat and reinstall XP because all the included crap really slows your computer down.
2. Upgrade to at least 1GB of RAM.
3. Upgrade to an X800GTO/6800GS if you want to game on it.

That should offer the performance of a somewhat decent midrange PC.

Damn, your parents sure spent a lot of money on you for Christmas...

Yes, as others said, PLEASE reformat and re-install. It will cut you boot-time in half, literally. There will be at least 5 ISP software on there, crappy security software, dell support software, and a few other things as well. Reformat and get rid of all of it. You'd have to do this with a BYO anyways.

To do this in your Dell, go into the BIOS, under boot devices, and disable the HDD as a boot device, insert windows cd (or dvd if MCE) and reboot. After install has completely finished, go back into BIOS and re-enable HDD as boot device.

You guys must've missed this gem:

[420-5585] Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, English without Media, for Dimension

No joy on the reinstall unless the OP happens to have a spare XP disk. Otherwise, once you hop into the Symantec restore partition and tell it to reload, you get the same thing over again. Bloatware in all of it's glory! Wash, rinse, repeat!

That?s good advice; but upgrading a brand new $1400 PC is truly sad.

You might be able to find refurbished X800XLs for roughly the same price.

you can reformat, just obtain a copy of winXP MCE OEM from certain places where such things can be obtained, and use your CD key (which DID come stuck on the computer, right?) to reformat/reinstall. AFAIK, doing that doesn't break your lisence.

When dell is good:
$256 USD CelD330/256/40/XPhome/17CRT (299 CDN Dell Deal)
$1250 9300 Inspiron (1.86 P-M/1GB/100/8XDVDRW/6800PCI-E/MCE) (After Coupon)

When dell is bad
THis ******
A lot of other ******

i don't recall when Dell started substituting an invisible partition with a HD image for a resource disk, but it's really annoying. my laptop didn't come with a resource disk, so now i'm currently stuck on the phone for over 68 minutes trying to request one.
