I picked up a dell T5500 for $2! had no video card, I had a 256mb pci-e card to test it with, booted up and ran fine to my surprise.
it has the 6 core 3.3ghz xeon in it, single processor, no card for the 2nd one (the T5500 can take a 2nd processor via add in card). has 4 of the 6 slots of ram with 2gb sticks for 8gb total. two 500gb hard drive.

I got on the way a 1gb 8490 video card for it. I know its nothing great, but was cheap. plan on getting a cheap 120gb or 240gb ssd for it.

i know its older, but I think it will still perform well, especially for what it cost, in people's opinion, is it worth to get the riser, 2nd processor, and more ram? Riser is about $40 to $50 2nd Prossesor is about $35 Ram will be about $30 (3x2gb).

is it worth it to sink $125-ish into it (not counting the video card and ssd?

i guess that depends on what else you have and what you'd be doing. nehalem is pretty old at this point - we're now 4 cores past it (sandy, haswell, skylake, sunny cove)
