Got a coolant leak on my 1987 Cad. Deville and other weirdness.

I took off the cap and it was still under pressure, but when I stuck the hose in, it would fill, then backwash, then the water level would drop and then surge up and overflow. WTF is happening?
 
Might have air pockets in it. Might have a cracked block or blown head gasket. (common on that engine)
 
Mechanic says it's the water pump that's leaking.
About the water surge, it's normal (he says) cause the thermastat opens and closes.
