128 if its for grandma
256 should get you reasonable performance
512 good if you intend to multitask ... or if you plan on dual booting nsome kind of *nix distro with KDE 3
1GB+ ... you wanna run dedicated server ...

thanx for the replies! right now there's 1 x 128mb, i was thinkin 2 x 128 and 1 x 256 for 512mb. or 256, since they dont need that much ram, but eh... they're paying for it. lates!

You need 192 MB for Windows 98SE/ME for optimal performance and 512 MB for optimal performance in Windows 2000 Pro and Windows XP Pro.:)

Not a problem as long as the mainboard will properly recognize and use it. i815 chipsets will take up to 512mb, but you got to be careful of the configuration. I don't know what mainboard you have, but you should be able to look up ram configurations on the mobo's manufacturer's website.

I'm running 1Gb of RAM with XP Pro. It's great because I burn things alot and during the process I notice no performance loss when doing other stuff.
