Got a bogus parking ticket when I was in KC

I parked my car in a legitimate space at 11 pm Friday and came back at 10:30 am Saturday to find no parking signs in front and in back of my car saying that that there was no parking between 6:30 am and 7:30 pm Saturday. The ticket was for $38.50.

I called the ticket office and they said that I would have to appear in court to contest the ticket. That will be a little difficult as I live 1,500 miles away. I called the Mayor's office, and they're going to have a supevisor get back to me.

If they won't cancel the ticket, will they track me down given that I had a rental car?

possible they will track you down to rental company, who may in turn poay the fine and charge your card. A lot of them have agreements you signed stating you will pay for any fines or tickets you incur in vehicle.

This is a very common practice. People from out-of-state will be ticketed because the authorities believe that they won't contest it and will simply pay the ticket to get it out of the way.

Send a notarized letter explaining the circumstances and complaining to the judge. Likely you won't ever hear from them again.

10:30AM Saturday is somewhere between 6:30AM and 7:30PM Saturday...like Demon-Xanth said...it wouldn't be considered a bogus ticket...I'd pay it if I were you. I wouldn't be surprised if the rental company slapped you with an "administration charge" too if they ended up paying for it....but they can track you down since the rental company has your info.

As far as I can tell, that's not a bogus ticket.

How do you figure?

There were no signs there when I parked at 11 pm so the signs were placed sometime between 11 pm and 6:30 am the following day.

How was I to anticipate that I was in a no parking space?

The only reason the space was subsequently blocked off was because there was construction going on.

What we see happening here is the same old Republican tactic of putting their personal fortunes above the practice of their "principles". Although they endlessly preach "law and order" and "personal responsibility" some of them aren't even man enough to pay a parking ticket they obviously deserve.

Oh, contraire. If it was a legitimate ticket I'd pay it, no questions asked.

Since the inner cities have a dwindling tax base, it just a transparent ploy to raise revenue.

I was in KC on business and chose to stay a couple of extra days to sight see. If they don't cancel my ticket, next time I have to go to KC I'll buzz in and out and spend my hard earned dollars elsewhere. They can refuse to cancel my ticket and have my $38.50 but it will cost them a lot more.

That happened to an ex-gf once. They went to the fair for a couple hours. When they parked it was a legitmate legal curbside parking space.
When they came back, they found the following:
1. A parking ticket.
2. A paper sign ordering "Temporary No Parking By Order Of Police"
3. 2 cops fast at work. One was hanging the no parking signs and the other was following close behind writing parking tickets for all the cars that were now illegally parked.

Of course they were local so they had the means to contest the ticket, and it was thrown out quite handily. Apprently the cops really CAN'T just declare your car illegally parked on-the-fly and ticket you without warning.

I'm not sure I believe this. Where the signs that were up when you returned permanent (e.g. metal) or just paper stapled/lashed to trees/posts? I guess what I'm asking, any chance that in the dark you missed the signs?

There were temporary metal placards on the side of the road saying emergency/no parking.

When I returned, the metal placards were placed in front of and behind my car and a piece of paper saying that there was no parking from 630 - 1900 on Saturday had been taped to the metal placards.
