Any game looks good on that card because you can crank up the details.

Apoppin,

Thanks for the tip about turning down the shader option in Riddick to 2.0. I had it on 2.0 +. It made an amazing difference. The change increased my frame rates almost 400%. I was getting about 25-30 FPS and now I'm getting about 75-120+ FPS with no change that I can see in quality. Thanks again. As I recall, you helped me once before with a problem that saved my butt.

The SLI can wait, I thought about that but I'll wait until they get all the teething pains worked out. The 6800 Ultra rocks and so does that 3500+ AMD 64. According to all the reviews I read, it came to within 10% of the performance of the FX-55 except memory bandwitdh. I can live with that since the FX-55 costs about three times as much as the 3500+.

Sincerely,
Hans Groenewold

PK is also NOT repetetive (Doom iii is just like playing the "same" dark cramped level; PK's levels are really different from each other), the gameplay is excellent, the weapons are well-balanced (and there is no goddamned PDA to take you away from the game) . . . . HOWEVER, PK is definitely a "horror" game (like doom iii) . . . . you may not like this type of gory game. ;)
PK (so far) is just walk into a huge room, kill an onslaught of bad guys, walk through an entrance into another large room... Lather, rinse, repeat. No tactics needed to take out the bad guys, just shoot at them as they come towards you. (I actually found it very easy to sit on one side of a doorway, and blast them as they follow each other through like sheep.) It's pretty much Serious Sam in a different environment. The repetition is what's making me lose interest already.

I'll plod through some more, and hope it gets better. :)

first of all, WHERE are you in the game?

The first couple of levels are repetitive - more "tutorial" . . . . and "tactics" are definitely necessary as you progress - unlike Doom iii - which never varies it's boring game play.

And i don't remember Serious Sam as being banal :p

On the PK note- I'm with Wingz here. Game seemed a lot like SeriousSam would have been if they took away all of the fun. As far as it or D3 being a horror title- PC developers are disgustingly poor at the genre and should never attempt to venture there again- none of the PC horor titles ever came close to the mediocre console counterparts. Honestly though, outside of EternalDarkness none of the Western developers in general seem to be any good at all at horror titles(which removes pretty much the entire PC market).

I also don't understand why people think it is visually impressive, the game looks very DX7 era- Mafia easily humbles it and is several years old as of this point.

You're welcome . . .. i have a 9800xt and turning SM 2.0++ on completely choked my system (of course it isn't supposed to work with 9800/x800) . . . . even those with 6800 series reported the same - looks nice but runs bad - i am guessing a SLI'd 6800 setup would be fine - or next gen. ;)

i am also not a bete tester for cutting-edge hardware . . . . sli can wait till next year for me. ;)

BTW, Chron of Riddick is my GotY for '04!

Not Visually impressive? Sure it is . . . did you finish it? the later levels are better. ;)

Well they are considered "horror". Not "good" horror perhaps. But - for me - Diii was banal and PJ is fun. There IS variety in each level design in PK (unlike Diii which is "sameness") :p

and the best "horror" i have recently experienced would be Thief - DS, Shalebridge Cradle level. ;)

Apoppin,

I was skeptical about Riddick since it was just introduced and already $29.95 at Best Buy. But when the game actually starts with the "Prisoner Walking" intro, it gets good fast. HL2 looks promising too, I just installed it and barely started it, I wanna finish Riddick first.

i was also skeptical until one of the forum members wouldn't quit with the posting on how great it was.

then i got it for $25 on sale at Curseit City ($29.95 is MSRP!) and also couldn't shut-up on posting how great it is. :p

IMO it is slightly better than HL2 (which is a VERY good game and very engrossing and addictive). The intro as a dream sequence/tutorial is brilliant!

BTW, PK and its expansion BOoH are also very addicting and fun - just not on the "level" of Riddick and HL2. ;)

i wish i could play more today but (i owe, i owe) it's off to work i go :D

I beat Riddick back when it came out for Xbox. Its a good game but HL2 beats it hands down. I've never got into FPS'er like I did with HL2. Other than online games.

Riddick is beautiful, the voice overs are awesome, I love the riot guard, and heavy guard scenes, lay waste to emm, But the Shader 2.00++++ is buggy as hell, and has yet to be adressed by Vivendi, I checked the game sight, on my 6800 it ran horribly with 2.0+++ set but at 2.0 it looked just as a good and even more fluid, oh here is a tip, shoot the riot guards in the back panel to take em out. An d eat moths for energy using x.
