Got a 3770 - want to make a cheap PC with it

Friend gave me a 3770 he wasnt using anymore. Its not overclockable. What I want to do with it is make a super small PC that will run linux, that I can run 24/7 and put plex and all my movies/tv shows on it.

Use: Linux running a plex server 24/7. Also probably torrenting and stuff

Budget: As little as I can (but no hard limit)

Country: USA

Brand Preference: None (normally Id prefer nvidia for linux support, but I want to just use the integrated graphics)

Current Parts: 3770 CPU, external HD for media

OC: no

Resolution: 1920*1080

When: ASAP

Software: NO

Basically the parts im looking for are:
  • A small form factor case (with a psu included hopefully)
  • PSU if its not included
  • motherboard that will fit
  • cpu cooler that will fit (I might have a stock 1155 or 1156 lying around if that will work/fit in case
  • Memory
  • small Hard Drive >75GB

Id rather not mess with mail in rebates, so just looking for those parts as cheap as I can get them.

just some ideas I had for cases:

something like this would be cool: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

or maybe this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ...-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=

update: dont really care if its SFF, I just thought it might be cheaper because they sometimes come with a psu.

But im pretty much looking for the cheapest solution possible, with 8gb of ram.

Mostly concerned with case, psu, cpu cooler and motherboard. Wanna make sure they all fit and such.

That's a socket 1155 CPU, isn't it? I would focus on finding a mobo that you like to go with it first, and a case second. This is because 1155 mobos (good ones!) are drying up in the retail channels. I believe if you get a Z77-chipset board, that you can still OC that chip four multiplier bins above max Turbo bin, if I understand that correctly. (Please, anyone, correct me if I'm wrong about that.)

Then worry about the case.

Edit: Worst-case, I've got a couple of H61 ECS boards BNIB, if you need one cheap. They are micro-ATX, with two expansion slots. (Not quite ITX, but might fit in an ITX cube case that takes a double-wide GPU.)

Edit: This one:

not a bad idea. Could even probably sell the windows key to someone too.

With some screen shots of the bios showing a working i3 CPU you could probably sell the 3220 for around $70-80.- (ebay sold prices).

Win 7 pro keys sell for $20 - 30

Net investment under $100.-

This wouldn't be a bad start. Also, others referring to that CPU as an I3... it's an i7. Definitely older socket, but still a powerful little chip.

Looks pretty sweet. I cant really tell, but is the cpu cooler built in to that? If not what kind of cooler should I look into?

If I get that, im looking at 200 for that, and 20-40 for the memory. I probably have an old Hard drive around here that would work for now.

Emailed the seller, it looked like it only had vga out, and it ended up being true. Not the worst thing in the world, but I dont even think my monitor has a vga input. This vs the shuttlecube vs building my own out I think is the biggest gamble since the quality of the parts might be crap (although it is the cheapest).

Looking to spend as little as possible. Dont need SSD or HD. Looking at that list, I would need:
CPU Cooler: Cooler Master RR-HT2-28PK-R1 54.8 CFM Sleeve Bearing CPU Cooler ($14.99 @ NCIX US)
Motherboard: Asus P8H61-M LE/CSM R2.0 Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($57.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Memory: Patriot Signature 4GB for $20
Storage: have
Case: Fractal Design Core 1000 USB 3.0 MicroATX Mid Tower Case ($34.99 @ Micro Center)
Power Supply: EVGA 430W 80+ Certified ATX Power Supply ($32.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Total: 160.

Debating between this and the shuttle.
