Gossip at workplace- dilemma

Hello all!
Person A started working at my workplace last week. Today, 'A' came to me and said that he thinks that person B just sits in front of his computer during office hours and does not do much work.
Now I know person B rather well ( he's been in my company for about 3 years, I have been working here for almost an year), and he is one of the hardest workers I have seen. I was naturally angered for the simple fact that 'A' tries to talk about someone who has been longer with the company than 'A' himself, and how can a person comment about his superiors in the second week itself??

I told our friend 'A' right then that it was none of his business what 'B' did, and that if 'A' had a problem with 'B' he should not come to me about it again.

Now I am kind of perturbed: if this person 'A' can make such a remark about 'B', it is quite probable that he can say something about me to someone else, and so on. In other workds, he is a person who is to be avoided.
However, since I know 'B' I am kind of hurt, too. I would like to tell 'B' about what happened.

But I have a feeling that if I do so, I will myself be gossiping/ bad-mouthing someone else. Not only do I think gossiping is something that can and should be avoided, I am also thinking that others might regard me to be no different that 'A' himself. At the same time, I would like others in my office to know what happened.

What do I do?

-->personally I believe that I should keep quiet and let others find it out for themselves. But then, I am sure there are other ways.

ignore it all, it is the job of supervisors/managers to make sure people are doing what they are supposed to

person A is a numbskull

I agree. Also, person A is NOT paying B 🙂 I think I *might* try to ignore the matter. Maybe....

Nothing productive will come from you telling B. If you wanted to express your concerns to your manager, that might be different, but in my opinion it's best to just halt the trail where it's come thus far.

yeah...just nod your head and say yes whenever someone starts gossipping...its the best thing to do

that or bring a gun in and go postal
