Gosh ... I need a new job but the market is tough

If it wasnt for the crappy salary I wouldnt mind staying put.
I have over 6 yrs experience as a network administrator.
I'm working for a small private school with no growth potential whatsoever.
Currently, I am making $32,000 a year and I'm salary on top of all of that!
I've sent out roughly 30 resumes within this year but no one has called. I received one good interview late last year but that didnt go too well when the guy stated I asked for $40k when in reality I asked for $45k. I dont know what he was trying to do.

I'm getting a little frustrated and I've been thinking about changing careers. I even thought about having my own little consulting firm where I go out and fix ppl's computers. Where I work, I have many parents who wanted me to come by their house to fix their PCs, but I rejected them based on me not wanting to spend any more time outside of work fixing computers unless it's for myself.

Anyways, what I'm getting to is, has any IT ppl changed careers based on their frustration of finding a job? I'm well underpaid and I need to find something more rewarding. I'm just getting by at the moment, but at the rate I'm going, I wont hit $40k until 2008 or so. 🙁

I'm basically in the same situation, except I only have 4 years experience. The problem I've been facing is that I'm overqualified for the jobs that get me in the door of a company that will allow me to grow and advance. Other companies that I could step right into a net admin job are small and offer nothing better than what I get now.

Change jobs. I know for a fact that you'd make at least $20k more right now in Atlanta.

College Degree?

Just wondering...

I am 22 working at a firm in NY making mid $30's and still in school. Obviously once I get that piece of paper salary will increase "dramatically" according to them. Also up for review in a few weeks. It's really luck of the draw as I see it. Smaller companies just call in cunsulting companies while larger companies keep large staff in house. The middle ground is most of us reside...

come move to Northern Virginia, there are a sick amount of jobs available.

Of course the overwhelming majority of those jobs require a security clearance and most companies have their benches filled with people waiting for their clearances. I know people that have been out of a job for over a year here and that is a big wall they keep banging in to.

Yes, I have an MIS degree from a university. It still doesnt mean anything.
I was making more money when i was doing consultant work for them until they hired me full time. Hey, medical benefits really help.
I thought about moving, but I'll have to think about it. I have too many friends and family to just pick up and leave.

Shoot, I'll be happy making $45k.
