I just dropped my galaxy s2 5 feet off the ground and it landed straight onto the screen. I am guessing it was pretty powerful because the force was enough to loosen the battery cover. The phone fell out of my pocket.

I check and the phone haven't sustain any scratches. Everything was fine and the screen held up A-ok.

It was like nothing had ever happen right after the drop.

I would say it is just luck if a phone breaks or not. I dropped my old Iphone 3g a few times and no issue. Including a drop on a tile floor so hard that caused it to get a no sim error. I dropped my focus a few times and it was fine. The first time I dropped my focus s and the screen cracked.

my roommate dropped my EVO 4g from no more than 2 feet onto a hard floor. Phone had never been dropped once before that. The screen shattered badly, that's the 1st time I've ever had experience with dropping a phone. But for me Gorilla Glass isn't impressive at all.

Shattering is going to happen with any glass if you're unlucky. Im more impressed by how Gorilla Glass doesnt scratch.

it just really depends on the angle that the phone hits the hard surface.

it all depends on how it hits the ground, if it hits on the edge its most likely going to crack/shatter, if it lands face down it should be ok

It is the SGS2 that is durable. I drop mine so much if it was a person it would be a professional skydiver.

Aw hell man you just totally inadvertently ruined my day. I read your post and thought that your screen broke because EVO 4G doesn't have gorilla glass, I had one for a year and a half with a crappy zaggs on it to protect the screen so I could resell for a hundred bucks maybe when I upgrade, which I did a few months ago. But then I looked it up to be sure and turns out I was wrong, I just thought it had soft glass for some reason, and never needed that terrible bubbly torn scratched zaggs that whole time. So I get up to grab the old thing and rip that piece of crap off, and I can't find it. I search my entire apartment top to bottom and its nowhere. I know for a fact that I left it on my desk deep in a little change/trinket/gadget/pen/keys bowl full of other stuff that I never touch, and I never would have taken it out of my place and left it in my car or at work or something. But it sure as hell aint here anymore. That means someone one of those days from time to time I'll go to work and forget to lock my door because its a safe neighborhood, my door is an interior door with absolutely no traffic or any sort but me and my one neighbor, and I'm from a pretty crime free small town and am still naive about things like that, someone really did go in my apartment, and stole something I'd be unlikely to notice for awhile and small enough that I'd not likely throw a huge deal about.

Damn.

Stupid pos GN and their decision to not use gorilla glass.

Gorilla Glass is just a brand of reinforced glass. It's not like the GN uses normal glass that breaks easy or something, it uses similar reinforced glass from another company.

It is tough stuff.

Ive got a screen from an old SGS2 and I've hammered the crap out of it with a penknife and theres not a mark on it. I might have to see how much punishment it takes to destroy it.

The actual samoled+ screen underneath it is pretty fragile though. You only need to flex the GG slightly to crack the SAMOLED bit.

Glass is going to break because its....glass. What GG is known for is its strength in scratch resistance. Also note that I said "resistance" and not "proof". People who don't understand the purpose of GG will be disappointed.

It seems pretty tough against flexing and impact as well. I'll take it out into the yard tomorrow and hit it with varying implements.

How do you know if the SAMOLED had been cracked?
