Just went to my local CompUsa store and saw the Apple Titanium notebook. I haven't used Macs for a while but for sheer beauty, it is the bomb! Wide screen, thin, elegant. Wow, should I get one? Any PC notebook that can win over the Apple in a beauty contest?

If you like the metallic look, I believe sony and Toshiba(at least use to) have laptops made from magnesium alloy so it'll have a metallic look to it. It's not exactly the same as titanium. Some of IBM's laptop have the top cover made of some titanium alloy but I believe they are still black though.

I've never seen any look like it.. I think its the only Widescreen notebook..
If I ever had to buy a naotebook I'd have to go with it.. Even though I've never used Apple.

I like the look of the thing, but unfortunately for the widescreen format, the new PowerBook still can't match resolutions with my ThinkPad (ThinkPad hits 1600x1200, PowerBook hits only 1152x768), and as we all know, maximum resolution is more important than physical size when it comes to the amount of data that can be displayed. Also, the aspect ratio of the PowerBook (2:3) doesn't match any standard that I can think of. (Widescreen is 16:9, and TV, like most monitors is 4:3.) Finally, I think that the screen isn't actually much wider than a normal 15" LCD, just vertically shrunk, though I could very well be wrong on this last one. The widescreen format is still a good idea, but it ought to have a max. resolution of somewhere around 1800x1200 at the current aspect ratio, or it should have a comparable resolution to 1800x1200 and a 16:9 aspect ratio. That said, the platform is nice and the 5+ hour battery life is a great benefit.

I should hope that you'd never buy a laptop based on how it looks. I still like the sleek black IBM look better though.:)

I have to admit I like the look of it myself, but Apple computers are always aesthetically appealing of late. Too bad their overpriced and the actual inisdes of the computer arent nearly as appealing as the aesthetics.

1600x1200 on 15inch screens are too small (the letters). I never use that kind of resolution unless I have a 21in monitor. The max I would prefer to use with these sizes(15in) is probably 1024x768. I played with the Mac laptop a bit and found it pretty functional, the keyboard is comfy, speed is more than just OK.

The only thing holding me back is the price..ouchie

You know, from my three friends who actually own the Titanium, they have a few complaints that one would think wouldn't exist on a $3000 laptop.

For example, the keyboard actually scratches the screen. I guess Apple didn't give enough clearance between the top of the keyboard and the screen, and everytime you close it, scuff marks appear.

Another thing is the flimsiness of the unit - it _is_ titanium. You have to be careful when playing with it or you might mis-shape the casing. And lastly, the little logo at the bottom of the screen that says Macintosh G4 or something - when the screen warms up it seems to melt; it gets imprinted on the bottom half of the laptop.

So while the screen and general design of the laptop is _very_ sexy, there are some aesthetic issues that should be taken care of in the next generation Titaniums.

<<1600x1200 on 15inch screens are too small (the letters).>>

I agree whole-heartedly, but only for a CRT. After two days on my ThinkPad at 1600x1200 I can't stand the fuzziness of a CRT. I hardly have 20/20 vision, and I can spend hours in front of the 1600x1200 15" LCD without any eyestrain. On a good LCD there is enough crispness that 1600x1200 on a 15" screen is completely viable.
