Friend and I are seriously considering setting up a carbon offset business. We will plant tree's on rural proerties for a nominal charge to the rich who feel guilty they fly private jets and consume electricty at a rate of a small town.

I figure we may as well cash in on this and plant some tree's.

I commend you for admitting you're among the money grubbing weasels who would concoct bogus schemes to syphon funds away from worthwhile projects while, at the same time, putting down and lying about those who are actually doing something about the problems.

At least, you're consistant. :cookie:

Um isnt this what Al Gore is doing with his business? I find it interesting I can do the same and plant tree's no less. But I syphon money from people with a bogus scheme.
Did you bother reading what other carbon offset business's do? Um many of them "gasp" plant tree's!

I guess you fit the definition of a partisan hack. It is ok if my side does it, bad when your side does.

I just want to thank Fern here. He has shown that there are plenty of valid ways to question the effectiveness of carbon offsets, there are even good ways to argue that they don't work. He does all this without being an idiot. Without going "Hurfff bllurrrffff Al Gore's stupid.. he said he invnted the intarnet!"

I personally believe that there is enough credibility and enough reason to believe they are effective that they are worthwile to have, but I feel like most of you people couldn't care less if they work or not. You just hate Al Gore and look for any possible excuse to attack him. This is shown by the fact that you keep repeating the same illogical arguments no matter how many times, and how thoroughly they are discredited. If you aren't the slightest bit interested in what other people have to say, and aren't contributing anything to the discussion outside of insults and poorly thought out arguments... why do you bother?

I simply do not believe that Al Gore is someone who is honestly following through with his "carbon offset" intentions. I also believe that the majority of these "offset" services are bullsh*t money-making schemes to begin with.

I highly doubt that Gore is damaging his own bottom-line in order to "offset" his personal carbon footprint. I question his integrity, and therefore won't be surprised when we all find out that his company is into some shady bullsh*t.

Fact is, I doubt the integrity of most high-level politicians. There are very few I have any respect for.

However, I still trust Obama, and I sincerely hope he remains honest. How is that for political partisanship!? Then again, I'm not even a Republican... although most folks here at P&N assume that I am simply because of my right-leaning views on Defense and the GWOT. That's their mistake...

Simply because I redirected your standard immature personal attack toward the scumbag politician in question... it worked out great for me! It's kinda my own creative version of the rubber and glue comeback... in this case, Gore became the glue.

better luck next time lady.

Now you just need to get the rest of this forum to adopt this ideology when referring to Bush, or anybody in his administration.

(A pipe dream, I know)

Neither of you is required by law to do anything about your toxic emissions and habits, but unlike Al Gore, who is doing plenty about the problem, you're not doing squat.

Have you tried GasX to reduce the stench from your toxic emissions?

No wonder Gore is now Mr. Clean Air. The guy would profit a lot from having people buy carbon credits. Maybe that's why Gore has increased his carbon credit purchases from himself?

Because after taxes and business operating expenses, he will make a profit on the money he spends?

Aiyup! Nothing immature there...you certainly showed Al Gore and the entire forum the depths of your intellectual capacity. They have tasted your fire and shall forever fear its mighty stingy-ness with the hotness and hellfire and good good glavin la la la nice lay-dee!

This is a complete non-story. There is no conflict of the interest and you're uniformed or intellectually dishonest if you truly think otherwise. Threads like this just show how party politics divide Americans that otherwise wouldn't be divided if not for Washington-ingrained partisan hackery.

Uhmmm... just so you know Al Gore has been on his environmental kick since oh... the 70's. So I guess if you call three decades something new.. then yeah, he's "now Mr. Clean Air".

People are such simpletons sometimes - they can't distinguish a private citizen voluntarily buying something without any conflict of interest, and government officials with ulterior motives in where they spend taxpayer money, with potential scandal.

It's like calling it a scandal if Richard Branson gave away CD's that he bought from his own company, Virgin Records, and pays to fly on his own airline.

*What* is wrong with Gore spending the money at his company Michaels? And *he* makes *you* sick?

Then I assume you dont have a problem whatsoever with Cheney profiting from Haliburton's contracts? Good to know.

Halliburton doesn't have any competitors for the type of work they do. They were the only choice. Should Cheney be profiting from a war? Fvck no, but I thought he sold all his shares of Halliburton before he took office.

(/Taps sarcasm meter. Nothing. Hmmm.)

Gore is spending his own money. Cheney is spending taxpayers' money. I would think even the most blind partisan could see the difference.

While that particular talking point was widely parroted when this first came out, the FACT of the matter is there are other companies who are ready, willing, and able to do the same work as Halliburton. Someone already refuted ntdz with examples earlier in this thread.

Wait what?

Haliburton is a publicly traded stock. When Haliburton gets new contracts, the stock goes up, therefore stockholders make money.

Where does public money come in?
