you could write a book (and I'm sure others have) on how the republican party has continually shot themselves in the feet time and time again. There's not much foot left these days.
They couldn't endorse McCain because even 6 months earlier they had all tossed their money at Shrub. That should tell you a little about desperate the republicans have become. Still, unlike the democrats, at least the republicans managed to have several really good nominees (McCain, Forbes, Keyes, etc.). The democrats tossed out Bradley just to make it appear as though there's choice in their camp.
