GoPro officially unveils Hero 4 (usable 4K!)

Just saw an ad for this on a store's website. Just announced today, huh? Cool.

Wasn't someone waiting for a new GoPro to come out a few months ago?

I just hope they didn't change the accessories like the Hero 2 to Hero 3.

Edit: Ummm... I'm more impressed by their new entry-level camera at just US$ 130. Almost disposable.

Yeah, and you know, the Silver edition camera now has a screen built into it, so I'd almost recommend that for like a grandma camera - super simple for people who don't have a smartphone to do photos & videos on with great image quality every time.

I tried to use my Hero2 as a regular camera and didn't like the fisheye effect even when I turned down the field of view. It's an okay camera with a reasonable resolution though. And it's water resistance, at the minimum, for use in rain.

yeah i have been waiting to get one and wanted to get one before my scuba trip, and my scuba trip has been pushed back to december so i may pick up one of these before i go on it.

I just ordered a Hero4 silver, and am looking forward to using it to replace my contour for snowmobiling.

I also bought my wife and I two awesome helmets with built in go pro mounts, so we should be able to get some good footage this season. Hated the adhesive mounts for my contour.

Their shares tanked after the Schumacher news. While it doesn't really concern me that a gopro might be a dangerous thing to attach to the helmet its certainly something to think about, that you might be compromising your safety by wearing one.

It attaches to the top, like this (same helmet) -

I have ridden with a contour and it has never been a problem. I mostly ride in the steep and deep, and some backcountry riding in the trees, so I should not have much of an issue. Never even came close to hitting my other camera on branches or anything.

The blame game cracks me up:

Moncet’s comments last Friday on French radio channel Europe 1 sparked a wave of controversy as he suggested that Schumacher’s head injury during a skiing accident in December was exacerbated by the GoPro that was mounted on his head. At the time of the accident, Schumacher was skiing at the French Alps resort of Méribel when he deliberately traveled off the marked course and ended up crashing into rocks.

Unsubstantiated early reports, which were echoed by Moncet, theorized that the former race car driver’s GoPro might have weakened the structure of the helmet. Schumacher, arguably Formula 1′s most popular athlete of all time, spent six months in a medically-induced coma following the crash, and is now awake and recovering from injuries.

“I saw [Schumacher's] son recently,” Moncet said last week in French. “[Schumacher] is slowly waking up. The problem for Michael was not the hit, but the mounting of the GoPro on his helmet that injured his brain.”

No, I'm pretty sure that going off the marked course and crashing into rocks is what injured his brain 🙄

That's pretty cool, got any footage online to check out?

Regardless, who would have guessed that attaching a square-shaped "rock" to your helmet or any other part of your body could be an issue if it were to be hit head-on into the path of the body...

I thought it was common sense that a GoPro mounted to your helmet is risky. For one thing it's more likely to snag on the pavement rather than slide. For another, it's a really tough object that can punch through a helmet. Keep in mind, a helmet is just plastic and EPS foam

Well, in my case there is no pavement to worry about, just 10-30 feet of snow. Worst thing I would have to worry about is losing the camera due to branches, but that has yet to happen.

I only ride in the backcountry and on big mountains. Real snowmobiles only use trails to get to where they want to bail off trail and tear up the woods, so pavement doesn't come into play

Bah! Here in miserable upstate NY...trails are all we have, and we're happy to have them!

I'll have to look into these GoPro's, I guess. I've got a Contour Roam with the goggle strap mount, and do like the sleekness of that camera system vs. the more blocky and obtrusive GoPro cameras. Also the Contour would much more readily pull off of my goggle strap, so probably safer if you're worried about that.

Also...we'd all sink in 30" of snow. Give us 1/4 that much and we are in euphoria. 😀.

That was just a little dig at you flatlanders, just to see anyone else posted here who ride sleds. :awe:

30 feet of total snow isnt that big of a deal, as long as you have the sled for it. 162-174" tracks are the norm around here, and a lot of turbos as well.

My main problem with the contour was that it really did not like really cold weather. There were days where it should have been recording (got the beeps confirming it was), but then the footage was not there. Some cold days it would not even turn on at all.

For that reason I don't have a ton of footage, just because of issues with it. Some guys use them with no problems, and maybe it was my lower-end ROAM 2 model, but I decided after dealing with it last year I was going to go with a GoPro this year.

And to answer Kaido's question, here are some links to some footage I have. With the camera angle, it does not make the hills look as steep as they really are, but the snow was good. The first video is of me alone on a mountain, my turbo sled was the only one to be able to get up there that day with 4 feet of fresh powder, so I got the hill to myself for a while before I decided to head back to the lower play area where everyone else was getting stuck. Also in that video and of the one in the play area after it, you can see why I do not want to mount the camera on the front of the sled - would be covered in snow on ideal days like that one in no time.

when you get it, could you comment on how the still pictures come out? that is one area i haven't really seen much talk about, how the still pictures come out quality wise. i heard they aren't that great in the goprop 3, but curious if they improved much or at all in the new one.

one of the main reasons i want one is for underwater pictures when snorkeling (and soon hopefully scuba).

I have the camera, and I will get some test shots if you want. I played with some in low light and they were okay, but I haven't yet got out in daylight to see if they are any better

cool yeah man, if you wouldn't mind that would be great. just untouched pics would be good because i really am not that into photography or anything and rarely touch up my photos, other than just running the basic auto stuff in photoshop.

Sure, when I get a chance to play with it in some decent light, I will get some test shots to post. I am interested to see how they look as well.

Sorry, I have not had a chance yet. I will try for tomorrow, but will definitely get some this weekend for sure. Just been busy.

Here are those still shots. The light was fading pretty fast when I got off work, but tried to have it focus on a big maple tree, to hopefully see some detail.

Considering the light, they don't look too bad, though I have no idea what the Hero 4 and 3+ black editions looked like in comparison, as this is my first GoPro.
