Anybody doing this?? It doesn't have a monitor like dedicated dash cams..wondering if it's worth the bother.

I used it for work as a dash cam, got a few hours of footage, but my goal was to record the road.

The good thing was that I could plug it into the car. A 16 GB memory card would last over an hour at 720p. Only issue was turning the thing on and off, but the newer more expensive models have wifi built into them now. Wide field of view was great. Never used it at night. Only issue was when the sun was low and it got into the shot, that made everything dark but still visible. Because the FOV is so wide, framing wasn't an issue despite having no LCD.

Having to manually wipe footage may be annoying. That and remembering to turn the thing on.

thanks for the response..both of you. The gopro does seem to big for a dash cam. I will look into the Mobius.

this is the model i got: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYI2mB_7l2I
there is no monitor. it just records vids into 5minutes chunk, overwriting the oldest file first. so with a 16gb microsd card, it can record 1080p vids for about 40mins. u can change the settings down to 720p with no audio to last even longer than 40mins....i rarely look at the vids, but if i do, i pop the mem card into my phone

No on that and all the action cams, they aren't suitable.

GPS is nice in a dash cam, though not essential. What is essential, though, is cycle recording; the camera needs to automatically delete old footage as it records new, or else you'll never keep up with it. A dash cam should also automatically start/stop based on a 12V signal from the car. $50-100 buys a camera that covers all these features.

I don't drive without a dash cam now.

That, plus you'd have to manually start it up every time you drive, which adds a (minor) hassle factor. Plus you don't get front AND rear dual-camera recording, GPS route recording, loop recording, g-force sensing, etc. If you just want something basic, Incredisonic has a great clip-on unit for $90 that includes a long power cord: (plus battery)
