And, for the first time in years, Lindsey O. Graham (S.C.) and other Senate Republicans are advocating increasing taxes ? as a way to pay for a restructuring of Social Security. Bush has not ruled out backing the effort.

afaik the only tax increase Bush as agreed to is to raise the FICA cap of 90K.

I think any kind of tax increas is just a bandaid affect. The demographics dont work with the current system. At some time it will require a ridiculous amount of taxes that it will destroy the economy.

Bush's private accounts for all the nay-sayers may not be a totally bad idea from what i have heard. It is a scam no doubt as is anything to do with this system. But it sounds like the federal govt will still tax you and your employer at the 12.6% but let you keep the 4% while forfieting the other 8.6%

This could allow them to makeup the difference. I am all for destroying the system all together, scrapping the tax system, and making people qualify for it like Welfare. If your retirement accounts dont provide x amount of income then you can qualify for y amount of SS aid.

Part of his campaign was to not raise taxes. That was just 5 months ago

Ah...but he didn't say "Read my lips". And, besides, he had his fingers crossed.

Considering he continued to push his tax cuts after we went to war, I doubt we'll see him support a tax increase for something else. Although, I really don't see him ever vetoing a bill, so if Congress decides to increase, well, guess what?

I tend to agree that full-blown SS programs were badly conceived in the first place, and require some serious effort to overhaul (or remove + grandfather). I would likely favour something in the order of a 'guaranteed income' program (not at a luxurious income or anything) whereby a lot of the problems with savings and low income jobs making retirement impossible would be eliminated. (Not guaranteed income for life; only after some designated retirement age, perhaps 70ish). There would be plenty of incentive for anyone who could afford to save for retirement to do so, because I don't see that an SS scheme like you are talking about should provide more than a roof and some food.

I think overhauling your 401k program to make it more like Canadian RRSP plans (I'm sure there are similar plans around the world) would make sense; tax-sheltered retirement investments with a great deal of freedom to choose how you invest. This plus a minimum income plan that would keep very low income seniors off the streets would be my ideal.

I think that's probably a good idea.

we could pay for this sh!t if those rich SOB GOPies would just roll back the bush tax cut, which did not benefit anyone in the lower to middle class- basically 90% of the country

the only reason i get a $2k tax return is because i pay for my wife's tuition at 5k per year, my tuition is payed for by the school

so whats the reason the gopies voted against the minimum wage increase?

their reason for doing nothing for the middle class "it would hurt small businesses" -the usual response (when you can't come up with a good answer to support paying people a LIVABLE wage, got with the anti-growth answer, as they do for everything else)

i seriously don't think any of these people have ever had to work a sh!Hy job for pennies so they don't understand what its like to just scrape by every month, i've had at least 5 crappy jobs like that where you get payed minimum wage

sorry i got off topic, i'm pissed

well some economists argue that minimum wage disturbs the workings of the free market and increases unemplyment. It could be tase case that some menial jobs arent worth the minimum wage to the company, so they end up hiring less people.

Basically if you have a vacancy for a jobs that are worth less than 6/hr, incstead of hiring 5 people at $4/hr you hire 3 at $6/hr
