GOP=grand old party or good old party?

According to some scholars, it originally meant the Glorious Old Party. The Grand Old Party seems to be more accepted today.

That's very strange, considering it was basically the Republican Party that the founders of the KKK, Lieutenant-General Nathan Forrest of the Confederate Army included, fought against in the Civil War.
