Gooks?

Every once and again I try and find out what things mean. At one time, those were people from Viet Nam, but as time goes on, I see lots of people, who are Chinese, Vietnamese, Taiwanese, and even Filipinos, catagorized as gooks.

BTW, I have nothing against them, as I am married to a "Filipina", but why are they call this name?

It came from a Korean word called 'go0k'.
In Korean, Go0k means a 'country' and U.S.A in Korean is called 'Me-Go0k'. When U.S soldiers came to Korea, they picked up Koreans saying 'me-go0k', thus they started to call Koreans Go0k. But now it mostly refers to Vietmanise.

Acutally, most of the liqour store peeps I know around here are from India or mid-east countries. They must have come here with money, as I can't see how inventorying a liquor store could be cheap.

You are correct about the origin but I am not sure where you get that it mostly refers to Vietnamese? That's like saying the n-word applies to Eskimos.

many korean war vets were in the vietnam war and they called vietnamese gooks. it is a common term for them.

When I was in Morocco, we called the indigenous folks gooks so the term has been around a while.

I thought it started with the Korean war. What Deadtrees says sounds about right.
