google's new privacy policy

rh71

No Lifer
so we're forced to accept the new policy if you use gmail, google+, etc. I don't use G+ but I have to do it for gmail. Why are people making a big deal saying things like I'm not posting to G+ anymore because I don't want my details searchable on the web? Is this part of the new policy? I skimmed it and it seems pretty straightforward, but obviously they're making us go through it for a reason...

Give it time, in a week, everyone will forget and everything will be back to normal. When you use any free mail service, or social media site you should not expect any privacy anyways... I don't understand the big deal either...

People are under the misguided assumption that they maintain full control of information they put on the internet. The golden rule of the internet people never seem to learn ' don't put anything on the internet that you do not want the world to see'

As for email I have never relied on free services for email. It is free , do people think they are doing it out of kindness ? Of course they target ads and other revenue based on the emails. Get your own domain or pay for email and you don't have to worry.

^ I absolutely hate using my @rh71.com email address. First, I need it to be webmail so I'm not going to Outlook-it. Logging into and using hordemail is so much more painful. The interface of the other available web clients are worse. And besides, gmail / contacts / calendar and their sync with my phone is tremendous, not to mention the interface. I am with you on the [in]security of information though.

I use thunderbird portable edition. I don't like using web based email. I like all my mail stored on my pc . If I use it on the laptop and come home I can sync it with the desk top.

If you're not paying for the product, you are the product.

lol very true awesome way to put it.

Anyway I don't care so much about the privacy it is just the fact that you cannot "opt out" in any way shape or form except not using the service makes me so tempted to just... not use the service.

It is like google says "yea no one will care and actually vote with their feet." And I'm like "OH YEAH!?"

Anyway I am probably switching to something else. A big reason I even used google to begin with is because of how they stood up for themselves in China when the government was trying to probe them, guess that doesn't apply now.

My big hangup is GoogleVoice. I'm trying to get away from Google, but that service is VERY useful to me, and I don't know of any replacements, free or otherwise.

Not my words, have seen it on various sites so I'm not sure who the originator is. 🙂

I'm assuming this won't affect me too much as I'm not a Google+ user.

I only use that for free texting. What are you doing?

Texting, and the phone number. I use prepaid cell phones exclusively, and having an easily portable number makes getting a new phone trivial. For awhile, I was getting a new phone every couple months due to hitting specials. With GoogleVoice, I could keep the same number.

Like many have pointed out -

A. most are not paying for the services.
B. you have the freedom of choice to stop using their offerings and use competing services.

I am always in awe when people get worked up over PRIVATE privacy concerns, yet don't bat an eyelash over PUBLIC agencies invasion of their privacy. You have MUCH more to fear over government invading your privacy - as pointed out much better than I could in a blog entry here:

Coyote Blog: Public vs. Private privacy threats

I deleted my google plus account and adblock is always the first thing I install on my browser, so I couldn't care less what info google has on me.

The privacy policy is pretty much the same as it has been for years. The real problem is Google wanting to connect everything. I value functionality, and more useless crap on the page (clutter), more settings turned on automatically when they are added to the service, no opt-outs, etc., are irritating.

I'm thinking about ditching Google because their services have gone from decent to being more annoying than they are worth.

I never wanted iGoogle, which has to be re-disabled all the time. Why, after all this time, is it not an opt-in option, in the first place? Or, better yet, why was it even devised to begin with?

I never wanted the new interface, which they apparently did not pass by anyone with UI experience. Larger buttons, with words next to icons, are good, Google. Contrast is good. Effective use of color is good (two similar shades of gray don't count).

I can't send a search URL to someone else and have confidence that the first several hits are the same. Grrr.

Not really a concern to me if they consolidate and share info across their services. I use Google services (Gmail, calendar, google+, reader, search, android, youtube) all the time so they already have tons of info on me, makes sense to put it together.

If anyone would like to disappear and live free

Type what I said above to google, and you'll find, get all instructions

I think that criminals should be very nervous about using Google. Sounds like they could make a judgement call and turn you in if they believe you be one.

You DO NOT THINK - don't have even ability TO THINK..

"Judgement call", "turning in" - are TALK OF THE RATS. and "rats" don't think...

And who are THE CRIMINALS?
