Google's Gmail service scanning your inbox?

They offer you a gig of space for email. Its their space they can scan it all day long. Just don't sign up if you don't like it.

Exactly.

well im in the beta program for gmail, and there's no problem with them scanning my inbox if they want, i'm not plotting some terrorist acts or anything bad

I'm sure this is a repost. They use a program to determine what ad's to display. whoopde do. if you're so paranoid about communication over the internet, just remember everyonce knows what you're doing all the time. use the post office instead.

Like the post office doesn't konw what you're sending through the mail.........

dead horse + baseball bat, but:
Google says the content of users' email would remain private because the process would be fully automated.

"No humans read your emails to target the ads," Google's web site says.

When they went after communists, I didn't complain because I wasn't a communist. When they went after jews I didn't complain because I wasn't a jew...

The problem with this is that it could turn into a slippery slope very easily. If this is a huge success and google starts making tons of money, you can bet that every email provider out there (including your ISP) will start doing it. Money is money.

Well, I'd trust google and its use of advertising over hotmail and its selling of my email address any day.

Does hotmail really sell your email address? Or are you just an Anti-Microsoft zealot who just makes things up?

I would guess the latter...

yeah, I don't use hotmail. I do have a few family members who have for years and don't get a bit of spam

I don't know what's funnier, the fact that someone brought this up AGAIN for some reason, or the fact that some people apparently think their email is secret and private. If you want privacy, use PGP.

Not at all. I am a big MS fan. I had a hotmail address and rarely used it. At some point they had a big feature upgrade, and at that point i began receiving inordinant amounts of spam. A friend of mine had the same problem and claimed that they added some option about releasing information about your email address and it was by default set to enable it.

[added]I am pretty sure they stopped this "feature" after they began using MS Passport
