Don't know about you, but I wouldn't be particularly happy about that if I was using their e-mail service. Guess that means I won't be using it. 🙂

Does it also apply to email that you send to people with gmail?

Yes it does... it scans every e-mail that goes in our out of their mail server to tailor advertisements to the Gmail user.

But if you choose to use their email service, and you agree to their policies (which you read when you signed up, right?), then you have no reason to be upset with what they are doing. If it's spelled out clearly in plain English, then eveyone can STFU about the ads.

Rreally, you don't say. See I was under the impression that
everyone already knew about this. But
please, if I'm wrong don't hesitate to point out my
oversight. Because I'd hate to have
stifled a valid
topic of discussion.

You're only thinking from one side. If I sent someone an email who uses that service, and had no knowledge that every email I sent was being scanned by Google, then how is that spelled out in plain English to me?

Because you should understand that your emails are transmitted in plain-text to begin with and that anyone between you and your mail's destination could be scanning it.

But it could be argued that this is a blatant invasion of privacy. It's a lot easier to make that argument when you're pointing your finger at a major company and not at some pimply-faced teenage haxxor.

And if you have a problem sending email to someone using Google's system, then take it up with that person. It's not Google's problem if your email recipient is using their system.

My favorite button on these forums is the one that says "Post smear about Jeff7181". Watch this:

YOU reposted, so YOU STFU.

😀

Random word generation. I have no idea what it says, really.

On topic, Anandtech Forums used to do this same sort of thing, too, with the Ads On The Left.

Where have you been? GMail announced this back on March 31st/April 1st. That's the whole plan ... they offer you 1GB of storage space and in return, they scan the hell out of your e-mails and send you spam accordingly.

I would be cautious in discussing viagra, enlargements, and diplomas!

You're a freakin' moron if you believe that gmail is an invasion of privacy.

1) No human reads the emails, all the "scanning" is done by computers
2) any other email provider be it hotmail or yahoo, has the ability to scan your emails also.
3) Like mentioned before, if your email is plain text a script kiddie could scan it.

I'm just sick of people being mis-informed about gmail.
