anyone know why the name change?

That's going to be my bet. A site not related to Google, but using their name to sell stuff typically runs afoul of trademark law.

It would have to be a legal challenge from google. A name like Googlegear just trips off the tongue. Zipzoomfly... that's just a pain to say. No flow.
