Is anyone currently using this app? I've been looking for something like this for a while now, but the reviews aren't filling me with warm fuzzies. Not to mention the fact that it apparently requires your GMail username and password to work.

I've seen a few complaints on other forums about battery usage, but the developer claims to have fixed this in the most recent version. I guess I'm just looking for a vote of confidence on this one before purchasing it. It's a shame more apps don't have trial versions...

THANK you. i have been using TextPlus actually, just to get my phone to ring a notification sound when i get a text. i have sprint and my number was meshed instead of ported to google voice, so i get text notifications on either android or my winmo phone, not both. text plus was a work around for that.

but this seems better. thats pretty bad that the app needs your google account info though, as thats what holds your credit card info for purchasing apps. im not sure if i want to try it because of that, but at the same time it would solve so many problems for me....

EDIT: "this rom you are running is not yet supported"

im running a 2.3.7 miui rom. i guess im sol

Why not just use the official Google Voice app?

EDIT: Ah, so you can use a third party messaging app like Chomp, Handcent, or GoSMS. But it says it doesn't work with popup notifications, which is the main reason I like those apps. Hmm.

1. it sucks

2. i have sprint, so my google voice # is the same as my cell. i havent found a way for text notifications to pop up on both my winmo cell and my inactivated droid at the same time.

in the google voice app, you have to select notifications from either gv or from native text. but the setting is saved in the cloud, so its a global change to my sprint phone too. so if i set it to gv texting, my sprint phone doesnt get the text. if i set it to native texting, the gv app will GET the texts but it wont notify that it did (because it thinks the native text app will notify, but the native app doesnt get texts because the cellular service is inactive). its a weird situation, but im in it.

I'm a Google Voice user and I still don't understand what the point of this app is.
Yes, I read the description.

Yes, I read the description.

The Google Voice app is kind of crap. It's a very bare-bones messaging app with virtually no features or settings at all. GoSMS and the like are far more customizable and feature-rich.

You're making a bunch of vague references and conclusions without giving any actual examples.
GoSMS is not a Google Voice app. It replaces stock messaging app(which I never use anyway, see sentence below) on phones.

I don't know what my Straight Talk cellphone number is. Neither does anyone else. I use Google Voice for all calls/messages. What features or settings could I possibly be missing that I need?
What features or settings are missing from Google Voice that this app has?

I'm comparing GoSMS' functionality to the GV app's SMS functionality. Was that not clear? If you want specifics: how about notification settings, of which there are none in GV other than on/off? Privacy settings?

GoSMS and Handcent and the like are endlessly customizable. GV has virtually no settings to alter. Notifications on/off, do not disturb... that's about it.

Like I said, it's very bare-bones.

You're obviously not understanding the main issue here... GoSMS can NOT read GV texts. Yes it's more feature rich and customizeable, but when you never get a single text it doesn't really matter does it? The GV app is terrible, but has been the only way to read texts sent to you GV number in an app. You can get texts forwarded to your cell #, but that defeats the purpose of using less texts.

Recommending GoSMS here doesn't help at all because it doesn't sync with GV, which is the whole point of this thread.

The GV app seems fine to me. It notifies me when I get a text and I respond. Not sure what else you'd need.

You're obviously not understanding the main point of this app. I get it. It's not a solution you need with your particular setup. I, personally, happen to like the idea of having texts sent to my GV number accessible in GoSMS, hence my questions about this app. Why is that so difficult to understand?

"I don't know why I would ever use this app" != "No one should ever have a need for this app."

this app basically inserts gv texts as standard SMS in the system, which can then be picked up by any SMS app. it is solving the problem you mention above.(supposedly, i haven't tried it)

disable gv notifications.
receive gv text
this app intercepts it and inserts a SMS into the standard sms database
your sms app of choice picks up that sms and displays whatever alerts you have configured.

Can't see why it would but I haven't used this app.

I tried it out, it works as I described above. Dl the app, enable integration, disable gv app notifications, and use your SMS app of choice to send and receive gv texts. Works smoothly so far.

Do you use pop up notifications and are they working?

Have you tried services like Airdroid and MightyText with this setup?

I'm going to have to try this. Wife and I just signed up for Verizon and we're saving $20 a month by skipping the text plan. I can deal with Google Voice's quirks but she might prefer to use a regular texting app. If this works well I'll just get it for her phone as well and the transition will be totally painless. We tend to stick to stock roms anyway so hopefully it works.

Just bought the app and tried it out. Only did one text so far but it sends and receives texts via Google Voice perfectly using the stock messaging app. SMS Popup was enabled but didn't seem to activate, and I don't have Handcent installed at the moment, so I will need to do some more testing to see if I can get pop up notifications working.

I know the app description said go SMS popup won't work. Quite possible the way the SMS is moved over won't trigger any popup.

Yeah, I tried Handcent and the popup didn't happen there either.

Oh well, I still like Handcent's interface customization and it definitely beats Voice's new-thread-every-day view.
