What this means - you no longer have to use the Google Voice website as the front end to PLACE calls through Gizmo. In terms of iPhones and the like, it means you no longer need 2 apps to place a call (GV + your SIP app).

Simply change your SIP app settings from your Gizmo5 username to your Gizmo5 SIP number (1747xxxxxxx). No other settings need to change. Then, you can simply dial outbound calls DIRECTLY from your SIP app as normal, and they will be connected without playing any sort of app hockey or anything.

I've personally tested this with Fring, it works. I couldn't get siphon to work (no sound), but that may not have anything to do with anything.

Others have already made the update on their ATAs, and are working for the most part fine. Your caller ID shows up as your Google Voice number, and it does not cost a penny to make a call.

Enjoy!

I have to admit that your post made no sense to me the first half dozen times that I read it. :)

I'd never heard of Gizmo5, hadn't tried to make any GV calls (only used GV for inbound), and hadn't used Fring in over 18 months. I did a bunch of Googling and now I understand and this is pretty interesting news.

Is Gizmo5 really free? It looked like it was free for a while. How can they make money? There are connection fees for carriers to make calls - don't they lose money on every call?

Now I just need a GV iPhone app with push notifications that runs as a background app. :)

There's a cell company in the UK/Europe(?) that exclusively routes the voice calls through Skype, IIRC it's "3"?

As this tech becomes more mainstream the cell providers in the US will have to adapt. I shudder to think what they're going to charge for data plans.

Yep, it's 3

Yes, it's really Free. Gizmo5 itself for general use isn't free (except SIP to SIP). When used in conjunction with GV, it's free (Google handles the POTS-to-SIP portion, from GV to G5 is SIP, hence why it's "free" for Gizmo5). In the end, Google is the one paying for the calls. I don't expect the service/Google Voice to remain free forever, but in the mean time, why the hell not?

Fring supports push - somewhat. But by the nature of push, I have a feeling most calls will end up in voicemail before push notifies you (no matter what app). Right now the most appealing combination is apparently siphon & backgrounder, at the expense of battery life.

God I wish the iPhone's multitasking ability was better.

Yeah, it's not exclusively Skype. AFAIK 3 are an MVNO using other Network providers transport rather than their own towers. The Skype thing is the latest ply to get subscribers as when they lauched about 5 years ago they were selling 3G as all about video calls...and we all know how important a feature that is...
