Google update in chrome: safe to install + why the popup?

Since a couple of days when in chrome i go to "about chrome" to check for updates, I get a "Google Update" popup instead of chrome just updating itself which normally happens. Is it safe to go forward installing the popup and why does chrome use a popup now?

I just did a Google search for "chrome update popup" and almost everything I see shows how to remove a virus that does this.

So you might want to run a virus scan if you haven't already.

Does the pop up look similar too this?

Seems Google has put something in Chrome that wants access to certain system functions. That's making me wonder.

I no longer use Chrome, I use FF and Opera now.
