Runings Windows 7 SP1, IE9, and Google toolbar 7.2.2318 and Notifier version 5.7.7018.
Try as I might I find it impossible to shut down permanently Google Toolbar Notifier. I'm following Google's advice by clicking on the wrench icon and unchecking the "Show a notification if this setting changes" box. I can open IE9 and the notifiier doesn't return. But when I visit google.com, sure enough it shows up again in MSCONFIG as running. Is there a way to terminally kill this beast? Thank you.

Does this happen whether or not you are logged into google or not?

Try autoruns (sysinternals/m$) and goto the section for internet explorer. There may be a dll/plugin that can be disabled or removed.

Doesn't matter if I'm logged into my Gmail account. If I go to google.com the notifier turns on again. I used autoruns and deleted the notifier entry under the logon tab. I'll see if that does the trick. Odd,, though, because I don't have this issue with two other laptops, running the same OS and browser.
