For those of you who've used both and compared them, is there one that sounds better?

this is exactly what i'm curious about. I haven't used skype in a while.. but then again, I don't know anyone.. ha. But skype does have it's advantages in that you can really use it phone calls, as opposed to just chatting online

The voice quality is just as clear as Skype for me. Sounds like I am in the same room as the other person.

Skype > Google Talk

Call quality is clearer and you can conference up to 5 people for free.

What headset do you recommend? I'm thinking of setting this up for me and my daughter.

I would even say the call quality is BETTER than my SunRocket VOIP phone line, it's that good.

I can't justify spending $35 - $50 on a headset so I bought the Altec Lansing AHS202 for $16.99 at my local Target B&M for $16.99 ... there is a newer model the AHS202i which Target may have replaced it with?

If you'd prefer to order online I've read good things about the Plantronics Audio 90 but it seems to be fragile.

The PLANTRONICS DSP500 USB seem really nice but it's about 4x the cost.

Where are you and your daughter located?

You both have broadband right?

Google Talk's VoIP programs in Comfort Noise (CN), which is that hiss you hear when you are talking on the phone. In the digital world, that hiss has to be explicitly programmed in or else people will get uncomfortable at dead silence.
