Has there been any published data on how many servers Google has, as well as how much storage in each and/or total? I'm curious as to how much they have.

The data that they have on wikipedia is quite old, but that is the best I have. Suffice to say, they have a LOT.

I read on Wikipedia that (after doing some math) they have between 36 and 72 petabytes (450,000+ servers with one or two 80GB hard drives). It's likely they have a lot more than that (estimates as of 2003 and some 2006). Jesus.

I know, I remember reading some articles saying they are pretty much a second layer of the internet, but they would not allude to their data. Considering how cheap data storage has gotten though, I think even 72 petabytes would be on the low side today...

At some point they'll know everything, then their plan will be complete. There's no stopping the penguins.

Assuming they actually have allocated 3GB per user (meaning, they don't adjust as it's used), then the GMail servers alone would vastly exceed 72 petabytes. O_O

They want to digitize every book and store it on their servers. O_O

I always wondered about this. Seeing as how I never found any hard facts about how many Gmail users there were. Call it intuition, but I would guess that more than 85% of the accounts are using less than 1GB. The number does always seem to go up, but what if you got enough people together to fill up their GMail boxes, surely they don't actually have the space allocated to allow everyone to use the amount of space?

I'm pretty sure they do. Sounds like something Google would do, crazy sons of bitches.

I've only used 424 mb of gmail space myself, and I've had the account since the beginning. I imagine if you send a lot of large files though, you'd be pretty full.

It's an insanely large number. It's not just their operating storage... I think there's also like 5 backups or something along those lines.

The exact numbers are closely guarded secrets. My friend interned there this summer, and he did not have access to that information (it was one of the first things that I asked him).
