next Android will be names KitKat.

wtf indeed.

In perhaps the strangest — or, depending on your perspective, sweetest — exercise in technology branding in recent memory, Google Inc. is naming the next version of its Android operating system after the Nestlé chocolate bar KitKat.

Android 4.4., or KitKat, as it will henceforth be called, is the latest nickname in the search giant’s story storied tradition of naming mobile software updates after desserts. The partnership saw no money exchanged between the two companies.
Previous versions of Android include Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo, Gingerbread, Honeycomb, Ice Cream Sandwich, and Jelly Bean.
Rumours had suggested the next version of Android would instead be called Key Lime Pie, and the operating system was referred to as such internally. However, ”we realized that very few people actually know the taste of a key lime pie,” John Lagerling, director of Android global partnerships, told the BBC.
The deal was made just 24 hours after Mr. Lagerling cold-called the Swiss company last November, and details were finalized at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona in February.
Google gave little indication of what improvements or features the update would bring, only that “[the company's] goal with Android KitKat is to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”

Sundar Pichai, Google’s senior vice president of Chrome, Apps, and Android, announced the name on Google+, alongside news that over one billion Android devices have been activated since 2008. The news comes during a period of transition within the Android division, as Hugo Barra, vice president of product management for Google’s popular mobile operating system, announced last week that that he is joining Chinese smartphone manufacturer Xiaomi Inc. as vice president of Xiaomi Global.
More than 50 million limited edition Android KitKat bars will also be sold in 19 markets worldwide — some with winning tickets for a new Nexus 7 tablet or Google Play credits.

And?

The only issue I can see is free advertising/branding for Nestle. I doubt Herschey and Kraft would like that, but those are the breaks.

Would Kraft even have a case? Can they lobby the US Feds and say "no fair, Kitkat has an advantage over Dairy Milk!" I doubt it's even collusion, they're not even in the same industry.

It's an agreement between Nestle and Google... Nestle will make 10M "Limited" edition Andoid KitKat... Kraft has no say in this, they can have the same deal with Apple if they could persuade Apple.

So selling millions of phones with an OS called Kitkat wouldn't help Nestle over its competitors?

There may be no case legally, but to say Kraft and Herschey or even Lindt won't be pissed off is naive.

It's somebody from an unrelated industry providing free advertising. How is it far competition?

Well than obviously, Android should giving names to their OS's because the sweets themed names help the sugar industry more than the meat industry.

OH THE HUMANITY.
