Apparently Steve didn't believe that Google is activating 200,000+ phones a day and took a shot at them in his Apple gig. He accused them of including upgrades in that number.

Google replied by saying no, that doesn't include upgrades and only includes products that include Google services. So in reality...the number of Android phones being sold is way higher than 200K/day. I wonder how many in total it is?

Either way...I think it was pretty low of Steve to take a jab at Google without having any facts.

Angering the Google gods is a surefire way of shooting oneself in the nuts.

Just imagine an iProduct without Google... lol it would be a completely useless paperweight.

Just imagine Google mobile advertising revenue without an iProduct ;)

In any event, it is pretty straightforward as to how Apple collects its statistics. I wonder how Google is able to track the difference between activations/updates.

In any event, 230,000 > 200,000

First time activation with a Google email address (required for Android phones with Google services)?
I'd imagine the system can keep track of multiple activations with the same email address.

True. However, Google isn't really a player in the PMP or tablet market yet, so you're talking 200k Android devices, almost all phones, vs 230k iPhones, iPads, and iPod Touches (the latter being the biggest swing factor here). I'm curious - how many Android phones vs iPhones?

"Way higher" is likely an exageration. I don't think a whole lot of Backflip type devices are being sold.

It's funny how insecure Steve sounds. Sounds like he's really scared of Android and Google.

Well, this could work either way. If they only go by the email address, then I only count as one, despite the fact that I've owned a G1, Droid, and Epic (+Android on HD2). However, I've "activated" dozens (or hundreds) of times with custom ROMs, many of which identify themselves in different ways. I wonder how I count in Google's statistics?

Could someone clarify just what Jobs was saying with the 230,000? Is that since the iPhone 4 launch? Since the iPad? Is it sales of devices?

That is exactly what I am saying.

I am not saying that either Apple or Google are exaggerating their number rather would simply like to know how Google comes up with theirs.

It is quite clear how Apple is able to track these numbers as they are the hardware/software/activator/ect of the iOS devices.

Too lazy to look it up but I believe it was in regards to iOS devices sold. Basically all iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPad devices combined. Think it was after the iPad launch but not sure of the time frame.

And 200k+ Android activations is highly believable. Especially since there are multiple Android phones with different form factors to cater to everyone's individual taste whereas there is only one iPhone. Want an iPhone with a bigger screen? Can't have one. Want an iPhone with a physical keyboard? Can't have one. Android activations should get better as time goes by and more people move from dumb phones to smart phones.

For Apple's growth, I think it is highly important they move away from the AT&T exclusive and also offer a 4.5" iPhone along with the 3.7" screen. I really don't think a physical keyboard is a necessity for what Apple is trying to do. Oh, and voice commands on the iPhone sucks. Let's beef up the voice recognition on all mobile devices.

So, they taking into account 2 annual launches?

Have you even used an iPhone? Doesn't sound like it... As its pretty retarded to say it's useless without google as there's very little google in it. It has maps, but that's about it... And that has better alternatives.

I mean Jobs is still an ass, but don't pretend like the iPhone hinges on google as it's flat out wrong.

Why is Jobs such an asshole? Why cant he have a friendly competition company instead of a "we are the best at all we do" attitude? He created the Mac vs PC fence all on his own. What a douche. I love my ipod for music and I love my vibrant for phone.

I guess you forgot that Google's CEO was on Apple's board while Google was developing Android and Chrome OS to compete directly with Apple. I think he has a pretty good reason to be pissed at Google. I just think it was stupid that they waited until an SEC investigation to boot him off the board.

Even if it's really 230k vs 200k, it's a small lead and Apple won't have it for long. It's the same thing with PCs, an OS can't be #1 if it only supports 2-3 products from one company...

Anyways, they should stop fighting each other, Windows Phone 7 is right around the corner and I'm betting it'll be very successful.
