Has Google already created the follow-up device to its Nexus One? According to reports today from the UK, the Nexus Two (we’ll call it) is built, loaded with Gingerbread, and will be sold exclusively through Carphone Warehouse by X-mas. (Who?) A company based out of the UK, meaning if this rumor is true, Google must already have some plans to hook up with a U.S. retailer to distribute this puppy stateside, right?

No news on any of the specs, but if we look back at the Nexus One, you have to figure this will be the next developer phone and one that trumps almost anything else.

That picture above is by no means a mock-up of the Nexus Two and should simply bring back some laughable memories to a few of you long time readers. And didn’t Google also say just a few months ago that there would not be a follow-up device?

Not the strongest news link, but if its fully open like the N1, then this'll be worth following.

I seriously doubt there will be a follow up to the N1. Google has stated there won't be one either, multiple times IIRC.

It's not like anyone needs a proof of concept for Gingerbread either, everyone is clamoring for it.

It just confuses consumers and pisses off the retailers/manufacturers/carriers

Google said no a few months ago. Times change, and carriers/manufacturers need a reminder on how its supposed to be done again.

I just recently bought a iphone4. This means a Nexus 2 is going to be released in the next 6 months.

the rumor is that it may be the new Samsung device. No clues on specs or carriers

Samsung sucks at managing the phone after it's released, but their hardware isn't all that bad.

With the N1 google managed the software. As long as the hardware works, I don't care who builds the phone.

This. With Google essentially handling the software for the phone, its usually much more open and light years ahead of the competition. Heck, the N1 had most of its software bugs fixed by community developers, as well as getting OS updates from Google almost as soon as the source code was released.

Very true but we are debating the Verizon iphone again. We are debating rumors of rumors.

Either way...Samsung made enough enemies with the Galaxy S that a lot of people would have a hard time using one even if it was free.

The average user doesn't care about the same things as a developer or modder, and the average users are still buying Vibrants, Epics, Captivates, and Fascinates. Heck, a fellow tech at work just bought an Epic.

A developer, modder, or enthusiast, the people who'd be interested in another Google phone are the ones that Samsung has angered and made enemies of. Not the most enviable position for Samsung.

But, has Google had any past partnerships with Samsung? Not sure if Samsung is developing or working on Google TV designs at all or not. I see it as more likely for Google to continue their partnership and work with HTC, personally.

Either way, I'd love to see another Google 'super' phone released. Perfect opportunity for them to apply the lessons learned from the Nexus 1.

imho the only thing the N1 lacked was marketing and release on multiple carriers. if google could nail that I think they would find more sales success than the N1.

Samsung actually makes a lot of sense as a hardware partner. Unlike HTC and Motorola they have the capability to create every major component for the phone in house. Plus Super AMOLED looks like it will be a Samsung exclusive for the foreseeable future so if you want to use it in your phone you only have one choice for the OEM.

Samsung is now the only game in town with unlocked phones. If the N2 is Samsung it will be doubly true.

I didn't think of that. Thats a good point, Samsung can make every part of the phone themselves. Definitely a strength.

God, I hate Samsung's phones, they make some good stuff, but the phones have been hit & miss...

They did put a nearly inentical phone on all 4 carriers thoug, and the tablet will go to all 4 carriers.

Putting similar devices on all 4 major US networks was one of the goals of the N1.

If they pay attention to detail and iron out the problems, I would be interested in an N2, but I'll wait for the reviews first, (and an actual product as well).

I don't care who makes it. I just want them to make it. I'm not manufacturer or brand loyal when it comes to these things. Only thing I'm brand loyal is food.

I have my doubts about the truth of this rumor but it would be nice if Google came out with another phone.

What technology pushing would they want in an N2?

Dual core?

Honestly, I'm burned out on Android till they figure out better battery life.

I have an iPhone 3G that lasts for days versus virtually any Android phone that lasts hours :( (and I love my Android OS, I'm not bashing)

Droid 1 lasts between 28 and 32 hours. Not sure about other devices, though I've heard the Evo 4G can drain in a few hours if you turn BT/GPS/wifi tether, etc. For me, its not a big deal to understand you can't have every power hungry function on. Android provies a handy little widget to turn those on or off at the touch of a button.

Some details from a Droid-Life article.

* The device will be the Nexus S
* It will be branded as a Google experience device featuring Android 2.3
* It will have the same 4″ SAMOLED screen seen on the Galaxy S devices
* It will feature the same Hummingbird processor from the Galaxy S handsets
* It will be easily rootable like the Nexus One was
* It will be at least GSM, unknown about carrier or CDMA
* It will have no hard buttons on the face, similar to a Vibrant

As a Galaxy S owner, you have to think:

(1) Wait, I don't even have official Froyo yet!
(2) Since this appears to be based on Galaxy S hardware, the wizards at xda will have a hacked Gingerbread for us before any other carrier-sourced phone gets it.

The whole Samsung fiasco is because they have 4 fucking phones to manage for the US on top of the regular Galaxy S for the world. Then you have some other carriers in Canada demanding an exclusive version too. When you force a manufacturer to build custom models across the board, what do you expect? You can't expect updates like iOS ones to flow out that smoothly.

Plus, Samsung has a good grip on market share in the rest of the world that it can afford to screw up the US releases :D

Hardware of the Galaxy S phones, but with vanilla Android, not Samsung's TouchWiz crapfest. :p Another flaw addressed and fixed.

If this rumors are accurate and we can expect the same software treatment that the N1 had, then its reasonable to expect this Nexus S to 1)launch with Gingerbread, and 2)Get Honeycomb the same day the source is released.

Lets hope Google insists that Samsung use a better GPS chip though, have to avoid that whole mess.
