Google Popup blocka

Google Pop-up blocker doesn't have it anymore. It's letting lots of popups penetrate through the browser. How is the yahoo version of this? Better then googles?

Does google update their popup blocker?

There was an article about this phenomenon on CNN a while ago. As soon as popup blocking comes out for IE advertisers find a way around it.

However they don't seem to get around the popup blocking capabilities of... lesse... every other freakin' browser you can find.

Seriously, stop using IE. It's the best way to get popups, spyware and browser hijackers on the net.

Why spend the time, effort, money to figure out other browsers popup blocking when >95% of internet users use IE?

You're on crack. Firefox = different codebase than IE.
No sh!t. It's equivalent because you don't really have to deal any of the problems that come with plain IE.

It's better because pages still render exactly like they would in IE.

I wouldn't say "exactly" because IE's rendering engine has more bugs than a rainforest..

Firefox > IE, and that's a fact. 🙂

Agreed. If everyone switched to Firefox, or any other browser, then that browser would suddenly have pop-up issues because the people responsible for the adverts would take the time to figure out how to get around the blockers.

Since Firefox is open source, it wouldn't be long before it's fixed, unlike IE.

If you install the google toolbar with the advanced features it addes tracking stuff which if you run a spyware/adware remover will disable the google toolbar features, if this is something you did, reinstall the google toolbar and do not check the advanced features, the pop up blocker will still work.

Tis true... I have Firefox installed and use it occasionally. I'll likely start using it more now because I've got some spyware on my PC that I can't seem to get rid of. It's causing pop-ups when I launch IE. The semi-amusing thing is the pop-ups aren't even working correctly because they always end up with "page not found" errors. Adaware and Spybot always show my PC as clean.

Exactly.

I'm no Microsoft apologist, but some people go too far with their bashing of MS and their defense of alternatives. Honestly, if Linux was installed on 98% of the PC's in the world, you would see just as many viruses, worms, and security exploits as you do with MS products now.

Think about it. Why would you spend your time writing code to work against 2% of the population instead of the other 98%.

And yeah, I've noticed some popups getting around Google toolbar recently.

If you'd prefer to keep using IE, filter pages with Proxomitron and you should find ads - popup, banner and flash... even Google Adwords if you want - are a thing of the past 😛

It's worth using with every other browser as well.

Edit: might be worth putting this hosts file in your C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc directory too.

I could agree with the statement that MS is only targetted because it is the most popular except for one issue: ActiveX. ActiveX isn't something you need to view webpages. In fact most browsers don't use it. Ever. And for all the neat things it may bring to the internet experience it is chock full of security holes, several of which are used by the majority of spyware and browser hijackers out there.

True, if 95% of the world used Firefox there would be a lot more malware written to exploit the code. But I'm fairly certain that there wouldn't be as many glaring malware successes as there are with IE as the dominant browser.
