Why????

I looked at a Galaxy S8 with the curved screen and couldn't for the life of me understand why anyone would want a curved screen other than "it looks cool."

It's distracting when you're reading websites because there's a constant edge of distortion on either side.

Glass screen protectors can now only partially cover the screen, the flat part.

What am I missing here? I was really looking forward to the Pixel 2 until this...

currently google pixel phones both packs OLED displays made by samsung. it’s likely a no-brainer for google to preserve using OLED tech in the pixel 2 this year.

however, because samsung is presently the undisputed king of the oled show market for smartphones, and due to the fact apple has secured a big chunk of oled monitors for the iphone eight, google might also have a hassle, one that could have an effect on pixel 2 supply in the destiny. and all of us recognise that google is awful at meeting demand for its smartphones.

a new document from korea says that google is ready to invest almost $900 million in lg show, to cozy oled shows for its upcoming smartphones.

It's those damn skinny jean wearing anorexic hipsters man I swear to God, they can't fit a decent sized phone in their pocket now we all have to deal with skinny phones. I'm sick of this !!!

I don't care if the screen is curved or not, but I'd love to see a headline confirming: "Pixel 2 to have AN ACTUAL DESIGN this time"

:D

The problem for the phone makers is that the products are highly mature. There's not much innovation that matters, so they're forced to throw out stuff that people don't need/want but at least keeps some upgraders interested: QHD screens and curved screens for example.

Not to say QHD is useless, it'd be nice for VR if that ever becomes mainstream. Convergence is the holy grail, if your smartphone is also your full-fledged "PC" when attached to a display and input devices.

This isn't to say that innovation is dead, but that in their current form/UX, flagship phones could easily last 4 years if not for Google pulling the plug on updates or batteries getting depleted. So all the designers can really do is start throwing more silly features at us. I personally agree the curved edges are dumb but look at how many Samsung managed to sell...

Curved or not matters little to me, as long as those huge bezels are gone I will be happy.

Also there are different types of curved. The curve on the S7 Edge was poorly done, but the curve on the Note 7 (and now S8) is much better as it's shorter and uniform with the back also curving symmetrically. It feels great in hand.

Why curved screen? Because it looks cool and it sells!

People love cool things and would pay for them.

Whether it's really useful is another thing.
