sorry if its a repost.

"According to a Chinese website, Google IS developing their own OS. It seems that the Google OS is based on GNU/LINUX and comes with build number 1381. The system can be started from a 2Gb USB and so the smallest OS be working with only document management, electronic forms, text editor, as well as Google email customer, browser and immediate communication software and so on..."

Somebody skinned some version of Linux with a "google" interface. I think that is the picture everyone is referring to.

I have nothing else to say, just think on your own for a minute, do you really think that image is real?

if it is, it's really ugly. 😛

google already has an OS. Its what they use to run all of thier google search systems. It runs all of thier back end stuff already. Lets say your company buys a google search box (kinda looks like a router) this box runs a proprietary OS, you could call this OS google OS.

I think if Google released a Linux build that they actually made USER-FRIENDLY it would be a good thing. IMHO it's the only thing that Linux is lacking for the average person, and the same reason why Apple has trundled along all these years before the Ipod.

Google would have to do something VERY VERY VERY special to break out. It has the name, yes...but unless their version of Linux is something special I find it hard to see it being pushed foreward. Most people say Linux is hard and they just want out of the box support for their favorite stuff. Most distros come with that ALREADY done...the only thing I could think of that was extra that you would have to install on Linux that Windows automatically comes with would be a mp3 plugin.

Why should I switch from Ubuntu, where I can load and edit Word Documents, where my Email works just fine, where I can play my music, where my instant messaging can be had, where I can play World Of Warcraft and other games, and where the only function I feel I am LOSING by using Linux is the fact that I can't use all the new special MSN winks and smileys that MSN 7.0 comes with?

If google wants to make it big in the operating system arena, it has to realize that it just can't do it just as well...people won't switch away from windows for that reason (especially considering of a lot of Linux's 'it just works' advantages), just like Linux penetration in the consumer market today is still very weak.

The only thing I could see unless google does suprise me, is the fact that now you got Google (a company everyone and their grandma knows) pushing their version of Linux and it might just give it the public awareness that is needed (something with Linux is lacking)

That and the screenshot looks genuinely ugly 😉
