No wired ethernet kept me away and continues to do so.

Wireless AC?

I have multiple TV devices that include 2 ChromeBox, 1 FireTV, 1 FireTV stick, RaspberryPiB(not in use), ChromeCast, etc. I do have one ChromeBox wired directly, but otherwise, everything is wireless. Not so much as a hiccup. And it's all running from a cheapo TrendNet AC router.

For the most part, all of the above mentioned devices do not have ethernet aside from the ChromeBox (the FireTV might have it, but I don't use it).

While it does not have ethernet, not a lot devices do in that segment. I see very little performance difference on my wireless and wired ChromeBoxes.

this vs the new fire tv which is better ?

Not an easy question to answer. If you like the Amazon eco-system, FireTV is the victor.

I have an old FireTV and it is subject to some pausing in Netflix to the point the app must be rebooted.

I have read (and seen posted here) that Amazon apps are very difficult to load on the Nexus or to have work reliably, so if you use Amazon at all look elsewhere. That aside, I use Kodi on pretty much all of my TVs and I am told it would work well for that.

The one thing that has me more interested in this device is an Atom quad core CPU. I would figure that horsepower bests the FireTV (not sure on the new one).

This would suggest the FireTV is best. However, at $50, you're not likely to find a FireTV in that range, so it comes back to what you intend to use the device for.
