I have the 8 GB Google nexus 7 and it says I have a total of 6 GB to use but it says I only have 5000 mb for available storage

i'm assuming 6gb is "total space" in settings>storage? and 5gb is under "available?

what is taking up the most space in that list of items?

Maybe it's just from the preinstalled stuff, I'm not sure how big the transformers movie is that came on there but it's gotta be pretty big I would think.

The movie isn't installed unless you pin it after you get the 7.

6GB sounds about right, 2GB are dedicated to apps out of the box, then 6GB for storage.

The reported storage info on Nexus 7 is inaccurate. It doesn't account for cache files and app like Google Music can have GB of cache. There's also major storage bug with 16gb Nexus 7. If you let the free space fall below 3 GB, the tablet will start to lag like Froyo and Gingerbread device or worse. I don't think the bug effects 8gb Nexus 7 but 16gb is effected. The only known reliable fix is complete reflash of the stock image. Google is aware and working on a fix but they really screwed up.
