Anyone using Google Messenger? I've recently just started using it with my current Verizon cell number but I am wondering how I can use a different number on it. I've read a little about how people are using Google Voice with it.

My goal is to get rid of the Verizon text charges, and have a secondary number for texts and mms

I believe Google Messenger is a straight up SMS app.

If you are talking about using different number like a forwarding number with Google Voice (without using text from Verizon), then first you have to establish a Google Voice number, install Hangouts on your phone, and set it to be the default SMS app. Any text coming in will now show up on Hangouts, and it will not forward to your Verizon number.

(note that the solution to what you want to do has absolutely nothing to do with Google Messenger, your original question)

Yah, hangouts and a google voice number is what you want. I used that setup on ATT for awhile to avoid a texting plan. Now that it supports MMS there isn't really any downside other than you have to text with hangouts instead of generic texting programs. Also any program that uses default SMS services will text via your phones native sms service.

Which can be set to Hangouts.

You can set your SMS client to be hangouts. That's not the same thing as turning your GV number into your native SMS number. If all you are doing in normal stuff like texting, fine. If you want something like tasker to push a SMS notification through your GV number it gets complicated unless something has changed very recently. I know I have a app that is pushing SMS out the native number when hangouts is my default client, and GV is its default SMS option.

I use Hangouts for my two Google Voice accounts and Google Messenger for my SMS.

I know Hangouts integrates SMS, but it wasn't working well on my Verizon account.
