I basically need it for navigation. I am planning a trip to Paris, France and if I can use it in Wi-Fi spots before I take visit some tourist attraction that would be great! Reason why I ask is because I thought Apple "banned" it on their phones because of Apple Maps. Speaking of how does it compare to Google Maps?

Considering an iPhone 5 and Google maps is my biggest "the brakes."

No, Apple didn't ban it. You just need to know where to look.

It's definitely not comparable to the old Maps app (it's just Maps, not Google Maps) in terms of functionality, but... I'd say performance-wise, it's solid. If nothing else, you can use other navigation apps in the App Store for navigation when you are abroad. Those work better if you need more than just "maps".

The primary concern for the Google Maps website is that... it doesn't work that well when you have no internet connection, and you want to grab maps for an entire area (like the whole town). It only caches up to about 2-3 streets ahead of you.

HTML5 is not all it's cracked up to be and native apps are orders of magnitude better than any online/web only version.

HTML5 performance is only a problem on older iOS devices. Google Maps on the iPhone 5 runs and performs just like the old app. It's just missing some functionalities... and in general, it doesn't "feel" the same because it's running in a browser.

So is it possible to get navigation through Google Maps, like on Android + Google maps?

Turn by turn directions with voice (navigation)? No.

A list of streets to turn on with a map view like on pre-ios 6? Yes. maps.google.com in safari or wait for official google maps app in a few months.

I love the new Maps application. I think it's a lot better than the old Maps app, and I like it better than the Google Maps app in Android.

It needs more location data, but so far I've not had any major problems. But yeah, it you're going abroad, you may just want to buy one of the navigation apps and have it cache the area you're traveling.

Wow, that really close to iOS 5 maps. It's faster for me than the mobile website as well. Missing street view, but you can do that on the web page now.

Yeah, we'll probably get the Google Maps app, hopefully soon with all of the goodies that the Android version has in exchange for forking over your location data (which I'm happy to do for quality services).

Actually, I'm hoping that if Google Maps becomes the de facto standard on iOS, that it feeds a lot more information into the traffic system that Google has so it becomes a lot more accurate.
