google latitude- creepy?

is it just me or does allowing your friends to see where you are (or where your phone is) creep you out too?

who has this feature enabled? is it all contacts and on at all times? or can you control who and when it's enabled?

I've used it on a blackberry. You can control which contacts can see you, fortunately. In my experience it wasn't that cool, possibly because the GPS on my Blackberry Curve wasn't accurate enough. It would show friends that I was within a certain area of the city, but isn't nearly specific enough to pinpoint a certain restaurant or store that I'm in.

Just wait until you see the message on a digital billboard switch to "BlahBlahYouToo, you need a new wardrobe, come to Macy's" as you drive by. Google knows targeted advertising.

can you also shut it off completely?

i mean it sounds cool if you're in the city and need to meet up if previous arrangements have been made. but other than that, i'd prefer to keep my whereabouts private.

Big Brother on the cell phones now?

I am pretty confident that if needed, a cell company could triangulate your location...

Seeing as how a lot of modern phones have GPS capability, I wouldn't think it would be too hard at all.

Wasn't there a study done a few years ago tracking hundred of thousands of people's movement? I think they had to sign some waiver guaranteeing that that a person's name wouldn't be associated with a location. Big Brother is here already, except he's hiding somewhere....

don't modern gps phones use both?

I find it pretty interesting. When my wife is out with our 1 year old son, I want to know where she is at every minute of the day. They are too special to me to be kidnapped or car jacked. I wish she had a data enabled phone so she could use Latitude. Over protective? Maybe a little.. but I couldn't bear to lose either of them.

I have Google Maps installed on my Sprint Tour. Too bad it can't access the internal GPS for some reason. It's a known bug but Google hasn't fixed it yet. Other third party apps work so it's not the GPS on the Tour. Funny thing is that Verizon's Tour works fine with Google Maps.

You need to manually enable it to allow your friends see your location. But I've heard that the government can get your service provider to turn on the GPS function on the phone in order to track you even if you manually turned it off.
