I think Google is a nice search engine especially when they have so many creative stuff for free

hans007, how old are you? i don't know if you remember, but back in the day, google had the BEST search engine. yahoo blew (until they piggybacked on google), altavista sucked, lycos sucked. if anything, they've built their reputation on their search engine, and have expanded...nothing wrong with that at all.

:) Agreed.

They fill a societal need as best as they can and they make money doing it. Good companies.

I'm indifferent to Google. They serve my needs, but if they were gone tomorrow I'd still be ok.

That said, they didn't build the model. They simply executed it better than the guy before them.

I do agree that Yahoo's searches are sometimes better and sometimes worse than Google's. I use both all day, every day.

I will agree that their stock price is grossly overrated, but that does not mean that their business model is a loser.

Now hold on a minute here. Just because we think your argument sounds like ignorant incoherent rambling ranting and whining does not mean that we think Google can do no wrong or that we're rabid Google worshippers, etc. What it does mean is that, if you were trying to convince us of a particular point of view of yours, that you did a very poor job of it. And that's your fault, not ours.

the reason google is thought of as good, is probably just because they are new, and no one has had time to realize how giant and evil they are like any other big company.

i mean i used to work at symantec. everyone hates symantec with a passion, but back in the mid 90s people LOVED norton utilities.

that said it was adiferent time and i'm sure most people will hate google in 10 years too.

now i've thought this out, but if google disappeared tommorrow it would not evne affect my life. whereas sadly microsoft... has really changed mine.

i figure, if i microsoft disappeared, i'd have to go to linux or a mac. the mac would be expensive, but in linux things like installing a driver and clicking "next, next , next, finish" would not be there. "next next next next finishing" everythiing is basically what we'd all gotten used to with microsoft. installing stuff on linux sometimes is about as bad as installing a proaudio spectrum in windows 3.1 through dos with a scsi enabled cdrom on the wierd scsi on the pro audio spectrum back in the day.

so that said, i actually tried yahoo search. and its not bad. honestly for some things it does a better job. and basically everything else google makes someone does better.

i mean orkut sucks, google video sucks, google finance is not quite as good as say cnnmoney or yahoo finance, picassa online is no flickr, blogger basically sucks too and so on.

most of the best google things are ones they bought (like picassa, google earth, maps etc). so they arent even THAT innovative. the only innovation they made was they made a TON of money selling ads in a creative way. so then they can buy stuff and give it away for free (like tons of gmail space, or free google earth which would never have been free before when it wasnt part of google). google earth is a good example. they probably lose money on it, and it has no business model at all. but they are so full of money that it doesnt matter.

so why am i bringing this money thing up ? because its a double standard against microsoft. you are thinking wtf is he talking about.

well the thing is, google has entrenched itself as the big portal with lots of free stuff (and some isnt even that good). they sell tons of ads based on the data they gather from the free stuff, and then give you more free stuff. yet its somehow "good" that they are basically destroying their competitors by "bundling" free crap on their main page.

whereas if microsoft bundles a free virus scanner, or a free web browser, media player etc, its awful or something. and they are being anti competitive. so yes, google is probably just as evil as any other company even though they claim to "do no evil"

What version of linux are you freakin using? When I had Fedora Core 5, I could double click a .rpm, hit next, and boom, it was installed. Same thing with a deb in Ubuntu and all other debian based distros.

That said, yes Microsoft is something that has had a huge effect. But I recently switched to google, because at work I was introduced to spreadsheets, and it was nice. I love their personalized home page and the "widgets" that they have for it.

Google is a good search engine. Their results are generally the best.

Installing software in Linux can be EXTREMELY easy. (Or it can be a bit more difficult, depending a LOT on what choice the end user makes)

If you use Debian or a derivitive of it, just use apt-get
If you use Redhat or a derivitive of it, just install the RPMs, Dependencies can be a PITA, however, every package states what dependencies are needed
If you use Slackware or a derivitive of it, just use slapt-get (for patches/updates), or manually FTP the packages and use the pkgtool

Of course there is also the manual option where you download the source, configure, compile, and install that way too, which can be a bit more complicated ... but in general, most things people want to install, are easily accessible via a binary.

Installing from source can certainly give you some nice options, and I often do so for many things, but it isn't the only option.

And as far as drives go, they can be a hastle, but it's a one shot deal, and for the vast majority of hardware, it's usually detected and functional "out of the box" without needing to do any kernel hacking.

All that being said, I don't claim Google is not evil. I also don't claim Mocrosoft is not evil. I just don't appreciate misinformation.
