my friend and i were just discusing this.

the reason google is thought of as good, is probably just because they are new, and no one has had time to realize how giant and evil they are like any other big company.

i mean i used to work at symantec. everyone hates symantec with a passion, but back in the mid 90s people LOVED norton utilities.

that said it was adiferent time and i'm sure most people will hate google in 10 years too.

now i've thought this out, but if google disappeared tommorrow it would not evne affect my life. whereas sadly microsoft... has really changed mine.

i figure, if i microsoft disappeared, i'd have to go to linux or a mac. the mac would be expensive, but in linux things like installing a driver and clicking "next, next , next, finish" would not be there. "next next next next finishing" everythiing is basically what we'd all gotten used to with microsoft. installing stuff on linux sometimes is about as bad as installing a proaudio spectrum in windows 3.1 through dos with a scsi enabled cdrom on the wierd scsi on the pro audio spectrum back in the day.

so that said, i actually tried yahoo search. and its not bad. honestly for some things it does a better job. and basically everything else google makes someone does better.

i mean orkut sucks, google video sucks, google finance is not quite as good as say cnnmoney or yahoo finance, picassa online is no flickr, blogger basically sucks too and so on.

most of the best google things are ones they bought (like picassa, google earth, maps etc). so they arent even THAT innovative. the only innovation they made was they made a TON of money selling ads in a creative way. so then they can buy stuff and give it away for free (like tons of gmail space, or free google earth which would never have been free before when it wasnt part of google). google earth is a good example. they probably lose money on it, and it has no business model at all. but they are so full of money that it doesnt matter.

so why am i bringing this money thing up ? because its a double standard against microsoft. you are thinking wtf is he talking about.

well the thing is, google has entrenched itself as the big portal with lots of free stuff (and some isnt even that good). they sell tons of ads based on the data they gather from the free stuff, and then give you more free stuff. yet its somehow "good" that they are basically destroying their competitors by "bundling" free crap on their main page.

whereas if microsoft bundles a free virus scanner, or a free web browser, media player etc, its awful or something. and they are being anti competitive. so yes, google is probably just as evil as any other company even though they claim to "do no evil"

they built one of the most successful search engines ever.

they built one of the most successful advertising business models ever.

yet, somehow they aren't innovative and they're overrated?

true, they might gravitate towards being "corporate" and "evil" down the line.......but calling them "the most overrated company ever" is rather silly.

The OP is completely wrong. Google's success is because (to use analogy) the internet is essentially the world's most advanced telephone exchange and Google is essentially THE internet's phone book.

truth, it's only a matter of time before it's cool to hate google like it is to hate MS now.

So dont use google. Yahoo and ASK have been around MUCH longer than google. Use them. I personally dont care about the business aspect of google. I search, I find what I'm looking for. If they are making tons of money thru savvy business ventures then yay them. Thats what the USA is all about. love them or hate them, they are here. The same could be said about any large Internet based company. You always have options. Dont like google? Use Yahoo. Dont like yahoo? Use ASK. Choices dude, we always have choices.

I dont see the double standard. Microsoft is in a very different business - they sell software to make money. Google gives away software to essentially buy billboard space on your desktop/browser, and to build name recognition. Microsoft has strongarmed distributors, where Google has no distributors to strongarm. Microsoft has intentionally made life difficult for it's competitors in many ways, the most famous of which is IE's integration into Windows, making life as a browser maker nigh impossible. It's not as if installing Picasa blocks access to Flikr.

None of this is to say that Google isn't 'evil' or won't become so. I just don't see the correlation.

Well, with MS('cause you mentioned them), you pay for your OS & get a bunch of stuff that alot of people don't want & some you can't even get rid of if you wanted to. Why can't they offer a "lite" version of their OS's?

If Google forced you to download every utility they have just to use their search engine i doubt anyone would use it, even if it is free.
No one's forcing you to use Google or their services.

But you probably right that in 5-10 years everyone will be bitching about them.

I wouldn't necessarily call them "Innovative" either. Sure, they built a good search engine, but others were doing it long before them. Google search has actually gone downhill and has flaws. Now with Ad's it's getting worse. They are falling into the same trap that the other big search engines did before them. But they are the best at what they do right now.

I can't comment on them having the "most successful advertising business model ever". Do you have data to back that up? I've never heard that claim. But again, they didn't do anything that other companies were not doing before.

Google is good for searching, but I think the IPO and hype around the company is overplayed. They do one thing really well.

How do I tell if it's a very overrated company? P/E ratio of 62+ and no hope of revenues ever matching it's stock price to bring it down to a normal P/E ratio. However, idiots are everywhere, one only has to look at AMD vs Intel and how that situation has flipped in the past 8 months.

that just about applies to a lot of software companies out there. you might not get all of those things, but you'll get the majority of it.
