Goo.gl

Url shortener, ala bit.ly

story

It looks like today has quickly become URL shortener day. Just moments ago, we learned about fb.me, Facebook’s new URL shortener. It’s already in use for mobile and page link sharing and spreading quickly.

One of Facebook’sFacebookFacebook mortal enemies couldn’t let the social network have all of the fun and attention, though. Google has just launched Goo.gl, the official GoogleGoogleGoogle URL shortener of the world’s largest search engine.

In a short announcement [written in hasteful envy], the tech giant revealed that the Google Toolbar and the FeedBurner syndication service now utilize Goo.gl for link sharing.

The company also made sure to preach the strengths of its URL shortener and why it should be chosen above others. Google’s three key talking points are stability, security, and speed. These are no surprise:

I guess it was too much to see facebook add their own shortening service to mine data they'd rather own themselves, so they had to quickly scrap together their own.

Only available in current Google services of course...what good would it be if they couldn't tie it to your current user profile's data. 😉

i dunno, highly technical?

Any insight on what the chances are Google tries to buy facebook? Just curious.

they already have orkut , right? :hmm:

Although Orkut is less popular in the United States than competitors Facebook and MySpace, it is one of the most visited websites in India and Brazil.[2] In fact, as of May 2009, 49.83% of Orkut's users are from Brazil, followed by India with 17.51%[3].

Forgot about them. I distinctly remember getting an invite years ago, signing up, and never visiting the site again.

If they want user data from the right crowd, that would seem to be the one to buy, but I guess it depends on how much the data is actually worth to their bottom line and how much of an uproar something like that might create.

I cant stand URL shorteners. Ninety9% of the time that I see them, they are from spammers trying to hide referral links in persuasive but disinterested pages like those found on Craigslist.

"Hi! I cant believe I discovered the secret to wealth and happiness! My cousin told me all about it and I have to tell everyone. Just click here: http://tinyurl/thisisascam/referalid=123456"

Hide your affiliate URLs

Are you posting something that you don't want people to know what the URL is because it might give away that it's an affiliate link? Then you can enter a URL into TinyURL, and your affiliate link will be hidden from the visitor, only the tinyurl.com address and the ending address will be visible to your visitors.

Its most useful for things like Twitter. If you've only got 140 characters to work with, a long URL can take up the whole thing.

Deeko, you know I admire you and cherish your every heartbeat. But please dont ever mention the T word to me again.
