Google 'GDrive' online storage service

I'd be all over such a service after a nice little FUSE based filesystem came out that transparently encrypted and decrypted on my machine before Google saw anything.

Not for me. I mean, using toekramp's unfortunate incident, getting the data off a corrupted hard drive is still possible but getting that data from 3rd party location can still mean it will: get corrupted (but unlikely)/password stolen and someone deleting everything/a hole that opens it up for anyone/glitch that allows someone to run code (happened to gmail)/ or whatever that hasnt been thought of yet and then your sol. also, honestly, just how long is this going to be in beta?

personally, i feel safer in having a copy of my important files near me instead of relying on an online solution where *anyone* can have access to it.

Who cares.

This will never happen.

There will never be unlimited space for anyone and even if there is it doesn't matter.

Everyone's upload speed is very slow. ISPs would start complaining that you are uploading to much lol.

i'd be on this in a heart beat. although i don't see how there going to make money off of it.

GDrive+PGP=unlimited secure storage accesable from anywhere right?

If they want to handle this and have a 'golden' copy stored on their servers and a 'cache/backup' copy stored on my local machine then they better damn well guarantee the integrity of the data. If they have a hardware failure on their side there better be a backup copy on their side.

I can understand if they market this service as another way to backup your files or store your files. But if they eventually want users to use it as their main storage, the common end user will assume that the data they store on GDrive is guaranteed 100%.

if it were secure, it'd be a great remote location backup. I have my own backup system going.. but it lacks the remote aspect of things.

I actually just need about 10GB of space online somewhere... which accounts for growth. All my pictures will probably be backed up to flickr 🙂 Altho, if I start shooting RAW more often, I won't be able to use that.

Sounds like a great idea. Most folks don't back their stuff up, especially the ones that really should because they are not careful and get infected with viruses etc. If it's easy to do, there will be a lot of demand for this service. The only issue I see is that most people have a pretty slow upstream connection, so if they want to back their stuff up it will take forever.

Of course if Google is smart, they could make the software such that it would do the uploading in the background while you continue doing whatever you're doing. As long as you're on broadband, it could keep going all night and all day without interfering with your regular stuff. The software would then have to be smart enough to do incremental backups instead of backup up everything again.....

Personally, I don't trust any company with my information, so I'd simply encrypt everything before uploading it. Truecrypt for the win!
