Google Desktop

I got this installed somehow in my online adventures and I see that there's at least a couple of process that run on startup and there's an icon in my tray. It's been 2-3 months now, and I still don't know what to do with it. How good/bad is this and if good, how do I get into it and what's it good for? TIA....

Well...Google lets your search for files on your counter, displays weather and a calendar and other useless crap. You should be able to find it in your start-menu.

Yeah, well, why do I need it? I have a calendar function I use, I have the weather ten ways from Xmas, I use Windows 2000 search to find files. Is GD more convenient? Then maybe I should look into it. But I obviously do not "need" it.

Uninstall it. 😱

I agree. Google Desktop will have a negative impact in performance.

Well, I have definitely had some performance issues of late. Maybe Google Desktop is partly responsible, maybe wholly responsible. I'm uninstalling it right now. I sure haven't been using it....

Removing Google Desktop has eliminated an extremely vexing performance issue -- My Win2000 machine was taking at least a minute longer than usual to complete booting. It would reach a point where it looked as though it had completed booting but no icons/programs were accessible for over a minute. I just had to wait and wait before using my machine. And I do turn off my machine at least once a day, generally more. Upon booting my machine (the first time after the uninstall) I find that it no longer does that wait wait wait thing. So I am very very glad I uninstalled Google Desktop!

Google Desktop Fried an old XP install. I'll never use it again. Since then I have used Windows Desktop and I L O V E it. If only my hotmail calender and outlook sync'd.
