Google chooses WebM for video

I agree there does need to be a standard for video on the web as it can get confusing keeping up with all the codecs and getting away from a patented codec does benefit users in the end. The choice of WebM though surprised me, it is a container based around matroska format but not the same. The video is VP8 and the audio is Ogg Vorbis, using any other codecs with the container breaks their specification. The codec themselves are pretty good , it may just take a while for people to get used to using that for online content. It may also take time for media players to adapt and recognize the format.
