Google Checkout: how the heck can they afford to give continuous 10 off 30?

I'm sure most of us have used the google checkout coupon multiple times, so I'm wondering to myself how the heck can they affor to do this continually? Are they taking a lose as a promotional stunt? Can they possibly be making money by selling your info? How do they do it?

How the heck can they afford 2.7gb of mail space to everyone? How the heck can they afford to index so many websites for free? how can... how can...

In all seriousness, I'll bet a good sum of money that Google is doing this to get some market share. They're taking a page from Microsoft's book - lose some money now, get a lot more money later.
