Thought that Google was going to settle on the 17,000+ patents it received in its acquisition of Motorola? Not a chance. According to the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the Mountain View giant acquired an additional 1,000 patents from IBM to help strengthen its portfolio even further. A spokesperson for Google confirmed the transaction, but did not dive into financial details or which patents in particular would included in the deal.

I want to see some action from Google with all these newly acquired patents, once these purchases/mergers get approved and finalized. Google needs to be more proactive defending Android from Apple and MS, somehow I don't think the Android handset makers like paying Microsoft fees by the handset sold to use a Google OS.

Like a patent attny said, companies that get nto patent disputes are in denial and scream and yell for a while, then they become the same as the companies they were complaining about.

This is a good thing, and I hope all the litigation settles down a bit...

Has anyone published a good writeup of what these patents cover. I have a difficult time believing that IBM has 1000 patents that are directly related to mobile. Were these patents part of a package deal where Google had to acquire a lot of patents it didn't want in order to secure a few that would help in their legal disputes against Apple, or are they starting to gather patents for other areas that they plan on growing into in the future? If it's the latter case, it will be interesting to examine these patents to gain some insite into what Google may be doing next.

Apple don't just make phones. If these patents are to help Android defend against Apple or Microsoft they don't necessarily have to be specific to phones.

Google could do a "stop sueing us for [random aspect of Android] or we will sue you for [random aspect of osX]. Its really sucky and wastes time and money all
round (apart from the lawyers) but it appears that's the way the game works.

a lot of OS X has been developed in the 1990's, unlike say Android

o_O hence Google buying some patents from IBM?

honestly I have no idea what's in the patents or what google wants them for but its pretty irrelevant when Google started developing Android.
