Google based DVR Service

Google may be creating their own branded digital television DVR / satellite service. A DVR that lets you "Log In" with your Google Account before you begin your television watching would allow Google to serve up relevant ads based on: the program you are watching, your search history, the type of emails you have received in the past 24 hours (excluding spam hopefully), or anything else Google can track. Imagine the possibilities... You are watching Google Satellite TV through your "internet ready" Google DVR."

Aight, Google is going too far... Just stick to your search engine and stop trying to take over the world.

I have to agree, but when you have nearly $8B in cash on hand and nearly 0 debt, you tend to branch out. Of course this is fueled by a heavily inflated stock.

Bleh, all of their stuff is in beta. Video, maps, Gmail, Google Talk, they're spreading themselves thin and no FINAL products are coming out. Why don't you take some stuff out of beta for goodness sake.

They need it so they can make money from advertisements

It's just a title.

Yeah, but they are also 99% functional, and released. Who cares if it says "beta" on it?

Where's the Google brand pregnancy tests?

I hear this is what it says after you take the test: Please wait until we search for the result of your pregnancy test. In the meantime, please enjoy the movies that we have at video.google.com. Thank you.

And how exactly does logging in to be blasted by ads benefit the user? 😕

The goal of advertising in the media has ALWAYS been to hit the target audience as best as possible.

For advertisers, this is a dream because they can hit their intended audience 99% of the time.

For the user, due to the higher cost of advertising that the targeted ads would bring, it will probably lower costs BIGTIME. You likely wouldn't see anymore ads than you normally would... they would just be better targeted. It means you wouldn't have to sit through tampon and shampoo comercials as much. You'd see more car commercials and technology company comercials.

The ad revenue that the dvr generates could heavily subsidize the cost of the it, the same way that video games subsidize the cost of consoles.

I say again, how does this benefit me, as the consumer. I ignore all commercials, why would I want to buy a device that's going to spy on me in order to show me relevant commercials. As if I watch TV for the commercials.

I saw nothing in the article indicating this would be a free device.

Who said there would be any more ads than other services?
Unless there are fewer ads, what's the benefit to the consumer? That instead of seeing 10 ads they have no interest in they see... ten different ads that they have no interest in. 😕
