After humanity has lost out to computers in
  • Chess
  • Jeopardy
  • Go
  • Tic Tac Toe (by not playing)
  • Global Thermo Nuclear War
Google is training its Go AI on Starcraft 2.

I understand they are already making great progress in getting the AI to play like a human. After losing 3 matches straight to Roach/Raveger all-ins the AI created a Team Liquid Account and began bitching about balance on the forums.

If AI can beat us at SC2 I guess all we've got left is Calvinball

Were not truly fucked until the computers start making other computers that beat us at shit. Then it's game over man, game over.

An AI better at a spamming game? Shouldn't be a challenge imho.

Would AI catch on when people cheated? Would AI cheat in turn? Refuse to play?

If they concentrate on strategy the imperfect map knowledge due to the fog of war will make it interesting.

If it can have 10X the APM of a Korean pro-player and have perfect macro/micro it will be less so.

I wrote an AI that kept beating me at Battleship. That's when I realized if I don't want to be responsible for the total destruction of humanity, I should stop playing with that stuff.

I think they are going to be concentrating more on strategy than tactics. So it's not what the AI does in each game but how it'll adjust it's build order and such game to game according to the match ups it sees. Will it also be able to deduce the opponent's strategy by scouting? Will it know when to expand?

I understand some people's argument of wanting to handicap the computer's APM to match humans and all, but isn't the whole point to see if a crazy number crunching machine can outplay and outsmart a human brain in an imperfect information game?

I look forward to seeing AlphaSC in the 2020 GSL.

Let me help you out here.

Your link was amateur fight night.
Googles Alpha Go is the Muhammad Ali Title Match fight.

;)

it beat pro-level players, so this was basically a solved problem 7 years ago

saying that google can beat them even betterer isn't that interesting

saying that google can beat them even more thoroughly isn't an interesting proposition

You realize that article is talking about an AI vs AI competition?

Their current SC2 AI can't even beat the AI that Blizzard supplies with the game from what I've read. Clearly they have some work to do, but I think this is awesome stuff.

During the development they brought in a pro-player to test against.

And it beat him

  • Deep Blue beat the reigning human Chess Master. - no human win anymore against top level chess computers
  • Watson beat the reigning human Jeopardy Champion
  • Alpha GO beat the reigning human GO master
  • Alpha SC is ostensibly being designed to beat the reigning SC2champion(s)
  • Berkeley beat a retired SC pro player....
Maybe you and I just see those goals differently.

Yes, the Alpha level is higher, but Berkeley clearly established that it was no joke. Being able to reach that level so quickly showed it was just a matter of time till they improved enough to always beat the highest level competition.

Frankly, the only surprising thing is that it's taken this long to get to this point.

I already see how this is going to go down.

1) Computer matched against human
2) Computer plays game against human and wins or loses
3) Computer deduces the game is too time consuming and waste of resources
4) Computer kills human opponent.
5) Game over.

More like:
1) Computer wins
2) Human unplugs computer and goes for walk.

Okay, more like reality:
1) Computer wins
2) Human deletes AI program and goes back to watching pron.
