Googlally-challenged: Help me find "steel shot" or "bulk BB's"

Another weirdass MichaelD post, eh?

I'm building some speaker stands out of PVC pipe and MDF. To weigh down the stands and keep the PVC from reverberating, I'm filling them with steel shot/bb's.

I can't find an online place that sells them in bulk. I found sporting goods sites that sell a bottle of 2,000 or so, but I need enough to fill two, 24" long pieces of 3" PVC. I don't want to buy 50 of those bottles at $15 each! That defeats the el cheapo deluxe method of building my own stands.

The alternative is filling the stands with play sand. But I'd rather not do that in case the stands ever leak; steel shot is a lot easier to pick up than sand.

Thanks.

I wouldn't even fiddle with those.

Go to home depot and buy a $5 bag of redimix instant cement and whip up a batch, poor it in, and let it set.

Yeah, shipping on "solid steel" won't be cheap.

I do have two Academy sports places near my residence. I checked out their website (it sucks) and they have no reloading supplies.

I just may go the cement route! Cement expands as it dries, right? Would it crack PVC? Should I leave an inch open at the top to facilitate expansion? 😕

Michael, unless you want the weight, you could just use insulating foam like they use in they inject into the walls of houses. I'm sure they sell it in cans at Home Depot.

Thanks Pal. 🙂 Actually, I do want the weight. The stands are/will be 24" tall. The speaker going on them are 20" tall and very "rectangular". The stand needs to be "immobile" b/c I am a clumsy oaf. 😱 I will be putting carpet spikes on the bottoms as well.

BTW, I can start all projects next week. I'll be in a much nicer location. 😉

ps
Nice new avatar. It fits you. Hahahah!! Almost a Lifer too...how time flies when you're having fun!
